When a walk around DC turns into the opportunity of a lifetime. 🏰🧱

Joseph DeNavas (CAS/BA '27), a computer science student at American University , was visiting the Washington National Cathedral when he noticed volunteers building the world's largest LEGO cathedral, a 500,000-brick replica of the building around them. He wondered if visitors could explore the landmark in a video game, and he decided to build it himself.

In the National Cathedral Game, players explore as a virtual visitor, collect LEGO bricks, and meet George Washington, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin. Even the gargoyles chime in with fun facts about Gothic architecture.

Joseph debuted the game on October 10 at the Cathedral's National Acolyte Festival, where kids lined up to play. 🙌

American University historian Andrew Demshuk’s scholarship uncovered a secret that would resurface more than a decade later and influence how a German city chose to remember its past.

While researching Leipzig’s postwar history, Demshuk discovered that former chief architect Horst Siegel had secretly collaborated with the Stasi. Years later, that research emerged just as Leipzig was preparing to name a public square in Siegel’s honor, prompting the city to cancel the dedication and reconsider the tribute.

The episode raises larger questions at the heart of Demshuk’s work: What happens when new evidence complicates the legacy of someone a community has chosen to honor? And how should we confront difficult history when it refuses to stay settled?

Before enrolling in BIO-489: Biotechnology, Franck Uwiragiye ’27 (BS neuroscience) had never taken a biotech class. By summer, he was experimenting with gene editing, working on "wicked problems" like net-zero buildings, and touching a bioengineered lung. 🫁

Franck was one of five American University students selected for paid summer internships at United Therapeutics, a Maryland biotech company working on treatments for rare diseases and new ways to get organs to transplant patients.

His biggest takeaway? Science doesn't happen in a lab alone. 💡

📣 Celebrating a Legacy of Artistic Vision

After more than 20 years of extraordinary leadership, Jack Rasmussen, CAS/MFA '75, MA '83, PhD '94, is retiring as Director and Curator of the American UniversityMuseum , effective December 31, 2026.

Since 2004, Jack has transformed a modest teaching collection into one of Washington's most dynamic cultural institutions — now spanning 24,000 sq. ft. and housing more than 16,000 works.

Highlights of his tenure include:
🌍 Hosting artists from 35+ countries across six continents
🎨 Co-founding the Alper Initiative for Washington Art with Carolyn Small Alper, CAS/BA '68
🏛️ Guiding the Museum's stewardship of 9,000 works (valued at $34M+) from the Corcoran Gallery of Art
⭐ Becoming the inaugural C. Nicholas Keating and Carleen B. Keating Director in 2023
