Claire Lee, a Creative Writing and English major from Long Island, NY, is this year's winner of the Vivian Nellis Memorial Prize, awarded by the Creative Writing faculty to the student who shows exceptional promise in creative writing.

Many congratulations to Claire on the Nellis, as well as her acceptance into the M.F.A. Program at Brown University. Claire, we're thrilled that you'll be continuing your study of poetry in the fall.

Many students of lgbt/queer literature in GW English have read and studied Torrey Peters's Detransition, Baby. Exciting news this week is that Peters was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for her new novel Stag Dance: A Quartet.

A story collection that explores versions of transgender consciousness across literary forms that seem familiar but whose effects are strange, challenging and ultimately fresh.

We so are proud to highlight our English PhD candidate, Priyanka Sharma , who has been awarded the 2026 Exploration and Field Research Grant by the Explorers Club Washington Group and the Mark Beckler Memorial Fund.

This prestigious award supports her project entitled, “Spring-Fed Water Systems Under Climatic Stress: Field Research in Darjeeling, India.” Her fieldwork will examine how nineteenth-century infrastructure intersects with contemporary climate stress to shape the failure of local water systems in the region. Her dissertation project connects everyday experiences of the water crisis to broader questions of colonial histories, socio-ecological transformations, and environmental justice.

Congratulations, Priyanka, on this significant achievement and well-deserved recognition! Let's wish Priyanka a wonderful and productive field season in the Eastern Himalayas! We look forward to the stories, insights, and findings she will bring back from the field this fall.
