The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law was proud to take part in OCPD’s Pathways to Practice table talk program at American University Washington College of Law.

Students had the opportunity to connect with faculty, alumni, practitioners, and programs across a wide range of legal fields, learn more about possible career paths, and strengthen their networking skills.

Representing the Academy on Human Rights & Humanitarian Law, Claudia Martin and Eduardo Bertoni joined us to speak with students about opportunities in the field and the many ways a career in human rights can take shape.

Acompáñenos el 22 de octubre en la Academia de Derechos Humanos y Derecho Internacional Humanitario de American University Washington College of Law para el evento “Las desapariciones forzadas en México ante la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas”.

Con más de 131,000 personas desaparecidas en México, este diálogo abordará la grave crisis de derechos humanos, la decisión sin precedentes del Comité contra la Desaparición Forzada de la ONU de llevar la situación ante la Asamblea General y sus implicaciones para la responsabilidad internacional, las víctimas y sus familias.

El panel contará con Juan Pablo Albán Alencastro, presidente del Comité contra la Desaparición Forzada de la ONU; Juan Méndez, profesor de AUWCL y exrelator especial de la ONU sobre la Tortura; Guadalupe Fernández, madre de una persona desaparecida e integrante de FUUNDEC; y Michael Chamberlin, defensor de derechos humanos y director de Consultora Solidaria A. C.

Con la moderación de Stephanie Brewer, directora para México de la Oficina en Washington para Asuntos Latinoamericanos (WOLA), se analizarán las oportunidades para avanzar hacia la justicia y el papel de los organismos internacionales y la sociedad civil frente a esta crisis.

Join the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law on October 22 for “Enforced Disappearances in Mexico Before the United Nations General Assembly.”

With more than 131,000 people reported missing in Mexico, this timely discussion will examine the growing human rights crisis, the unprecedented decision by the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances to bring the situation before the General Assembly, and the implications for international accountability, victims, and their families.

The panel features Juan Pablo Albán Alencastro, Chair of the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances; Juan Méndez, AUWCL Professor and former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture; Guadalupe Fernández, mother of a disappeared person and member of FUUNDEC; and Michael Chamberlin, human rights defender and Director of Consultora Solidaria A.C.

Moderated by Stephanie Brewer, Director for Mexico at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), the discussion will explore pathways toward justice and the role of international institutions and civil society in addressing this crisis.

Meet Morgan Sanders, a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps and current LL.M. student in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law.

Morgan has served on active duty for more than 10 years and specializes in military justice. Throughout her career, she has served in a variety of roles, including capital defense counsel, special victim trial counsel, victims’ legal counsel, and appellate defense counsel.

She currently serves with the Military Commissions Defense Organization and represents Mr. Ramzi Bin al Shibh, a high-value detainee at Guantanamo Bay.

💬 Reflecting on why she chose the LL.M. program, Morgan shares:

“I chose to pursue an LL.M. in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law due to my work in the Military Commissions. I wanted to better educate myself to best represent my client. Because my job requires frequent travel to Guantanamo Bay, I needed flexibility and the hybrid track fit perfectly into my life.”

One of her favorite courses, Rights of Disadvantaged and Vulnerable Groups, has allowed her to explore institutional barriers and the protection of dignity for high-risk populations, particularly individuals with mental health conditions. She also credits Advanced Human Rights with sharpening her ability to litigate complex international violations and develop strategies addressing state-level accountability.

How does international human rights law protect people who are most at risk of exclusion, segregation, and discrimination? 🌍⚖️
Taught by Professor Eric Rosenthal and Priscila Rodriguez, this course examines the rights of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups through the lens of disability rights, institutionalization, and international legal protections.
Students explore how treaties such as the CRPD and CRC, along with regional systems like the Inter-American Human Rights System, address group-specific protections and gaps in universal human rights frameworks.
