Dean Roger A. Fairfax, Jr. is thrilled to announce the 2026 Hooding Ceremony speaker for Howard University School of Law, Damon T. Hewitt, President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
One of the nation’s foremost civil rights leaders, Hewitt brings decades of experience advancing racial justice through litigation, policy, and leadership across nonprofit, philanthropic, and public sectors.

For more than a decade, Hewitt spearheaded major civil rights litigation at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., heading the Education Practice Group, and shaping LDF’s response to critical issues including police accountability, education equity, and housing justice, and leading pioneering efforts addressing the School-to-Prison Pipeline, and coordinated litigation and advocacy efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

As the inaugural Executive Director of the Executives’ Alliance for Boys and Men of Color he led a powerful network of more than three dozen national and local foundation presidents focused on shifting policies and structures that impact young men of color.

Mr. Hewitt served as Executive Director of the New York State Task Force on Police-on-Police Shootings and also served as the Senior Advisor at the Open Society Foundations and a key liaison between the philanthropic community and the White House on policy issues affecting young men of color.
His voice and vision will undoubtedly inspire and motivate the Class of 2026 as they prepare for their own journeys in the law and carry forward Howard Law’s enduring legacy of excellence, leadership, and social engineering.
Hewitt will address HUSL graduates at the Hooding Ceremony on May 8, 2026.
