GW Office for Study Abroad and Student Exchange

GW Office for Study Abroad and Student Exchange The Office for Study Abroad (OSA) provides and facilitates quality international educational opportunities at The George Washington University.

As educators, we promote the academic, personal, professional, and intercultural development of students before, during, and after their study abroad experiences. We respond effectively to student needs, contribute to campus internationalization, and foster cultural understanding and self-awareness among the student body. The OSA primarily works with undergraduate students; some short-term, faculty-led graduate programs are administered through the OSA as well.

: “Thursday evening in Florence. Indian food for dinner and a spontaneous outing to a live music bar with Olivia. It was a tiny space with just us, two other ladies, and the Italian man singing. The ladies were from Belarus and Russia. The man asked us to join him on stage. So I went up and sang Take Me Home, Country Roads with the Russian lady. The Italian man played Johnny Cash and some Italian songs he wrote after that. It was a lovely evening with strangers and good melody.”

: “My last trip of the semester was to Portugal. We flew to Porto and took a Patel de Nata cooking class, visited the oldest library in the enchanting Livraria Lello. From there we took a train to Lisbon visiting the beach and eating more pastel de nata’s!”

: “Since the semester is coming to a close, my friend and I walked around Granada to take some higher-quality camera photos of the city to look back on! Some of the photos are from miscellaneous places around the city, but many of them show my typical walk to school, my residence hall, and the IES Abroad Granada building. I’ll really miss seeing these places every day, but I’m so incredibly glad to have been able to live here for the semester :)”

: “For my last trip out of Scotland for the semester, my roommates and I went to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague! Some of my favorite highlights are when we visited some of the spots from the movie Before Sunrise in Vienna (Café Sperl and the record shop) and saw The Kiss by Gustav Klimt! We also made a point to try the traditional or special treats that each city had to offer: lángos (Budapest), chimney cake (Budapest), and kaiserschmarrn (Vienna). I also found a statue of George Washington in Budapest!”

: “I have had the honor and opportunity to study abroad in Vietnam. Initially, when I first arrived in the country, my knowledge was limited solely to what I had learned about the Vietnam War and the devastation it brought. But as I sadly departed, the experience changed me wholly as a person.

One would ask: why come to Vietnam when Europe offers so much to explore? The answer is that Vietnam, as a whole, is home to so many things different climates and cultures, rich food and history, and diverse ways of life that stand apart from one another. It is a country no longer defined by the traumas of war, but one home to exotic beauty and resilience. From the rice plantations of the Mekong Delta to the historic capital of Hanoi, the country thrives and grows, and the sense of mystery deepens with every passing day.

With each morning came a new adventure an opportunity to try new things, explore cultures and religions, or do something as simple as sitting at a food stall, talking with friends and enjoying a bowl of Bún Chả at the very restaurant where President Obama and Anthony Bourdain once shared a meal. As Bourdain himself said about Vietnam: ‘It grabs you and it doesn’t let you go. Once you love it, you love it forever.’”

: “I used to be nervous about the homestay experience in a GW Study Program 5,000 miles away in a country I had never been to before. If the walls could talk, they’d tell you I ended up just fine.

I credit much of the immersion I’ve been fortunate to experience to these four walls in the Santiago comuna of Ñuñoa, and the amazing family who welcomed an exchange student like me as part of their own. Thanks to them, ‘family’ is not just a chapter I read about in a book about Latin American culture, it’s something I’ve lived.

In the wise words of Sabrina Carpenter, do you want the house tour?”

.n.desta : “One thing I’m going to miss about Seville when I leave is the beautiful buildings I would see on a daily basis. There’s so much color and personality to the infrastructure here that I don’t get much back in America. It makes you want to spend time outside (even when the weather isn’t the best 😂).”

.shea : “Visiting Cambodia was an amazing opportunity! Angkor Wat is a beautiful, religious complex in Siem Reap with tons of history. Phnom Penh is also a must see in Cambodia to learn about their genocide and political history.“
