Real estate is a vast and powerful sector of human endeavor, impactful enough to bring down the world economy in the Great Recession. Yet, with few exceptions, business schools have historically ignored real estate, offering at most a handful of real estate-related courses. As the United States and the world economy steadily emerge from the Great Recession caused by short-sighted and blindered thi

nking, what’s needed is a candid realization that real estate is a central sector of the economy. which all of us, including business schools, ignore at our peril... EXCEPT FOR NOW! The economy we must build to accelerate the return of prosperity after the Great Recession must reform the weaknesses in the real estate financial system that caused the crisis and it must place a new emphasis upon real estate and infrastructure in the wider context of business and the restructuring of the world economy. The post-Great Recession economy must be far more efficient than ever before, striking a healthy balance between the developed and the developing world and striving for fairness and access to diverse groups within nations. On March 3rd, students from the MS Real Estate program, as well as Carey MBA students with a focus in real estate, visited the New York Stock Exchange. The program included a speech by Steve Roth, founder and chairman of Vornado Realty Trust; panel discussions Steve Sakwa (Senior Managing Director EVERCORE ISI), Mary Hogan (Managing Director, Co-Head Americas Real Estate APG Asset Management US Inc.), Guy Metcalfe (Managing Director & Global Chairman of Real Estate Morgan Stanley, Investment Banking), and Michael Graziano (Co-Head of Global Real Estate Investment Banking,Goldman Sachs & Co.); and a visit to the trading floor.
