With over 170 students from 53 countries, the International Legal Studies Program at the American University Washington College of Law is one of the most intellectually and culturally diverse programs in the nation. The program incorporates a rich array of international law courses and seminars, experiential learning, and special events which allow our students to interact and network with esteemed faculty, international attorneys, diplomats, business leaders, and policy makers. Our recognized 24 full-time faculty members and 40 adjunct faculty members are leading practitioners in their field. Our diverse faculty have established strong alliances with various international, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations such as the World Bank, the World Wildlife Fund, the United Nations, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights, the Inter-American Development Bank and regional organizations such as Central and East European Law Initiative (CEELI).

This afternoon at AUWCL, Adjunct Professor Claudia de Windt spoke to a delegation of Argentine judges about the vital intersection of human rights and environmental protection, as part of the Environmental Law Panel. She addressed the global rise in climate litigation cases, citing the United Nations Environment Program's 2023 Global Climate Litigation Report. Her remarks emphasized the growing role of the judiciary in addressing environmental challenges and reminded us of our collective responsibility to protect the environment for current and future generations.

Today at American University Washington College of Law, we were honored to welcome a group of Argentine judges participating in the Brazil–U.S. Legal & Judicial Program’s two‑day Seminar on Human Rights and Environmental Law. The delegation is headed by Federal Judge Patricio Maraniello, President of the Argentine Association of Constitutional Justice. Adjunct WCL Professor Claudia de Windt opened the program with “Derecho Humano al Ambiente: La Justicia del Futuro,” underscoring a healthy environment as a fundamental human right and highlighting the judiciary’s pivotal role in its protection. ⚖️

We are excited to host a group of Argentine judges who will be visiting American University Washington College of Law from May 19 to May 23, 2025, as part of the Brazil-U.S. Legal and Judicial Program at WCL. During their visit, the judges will attend a two-day seminar led by our law professors. The first day (May 19) will focus on environmental law and judicial independence, while the second day (May 20) will cover human rights and justice. On the afternoon of the second day, the judges will serve as judges in the Moot Court competition. Their itinerary also includes a tour of the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, where they will observe a criminal jury trial and a status hearing on a civil case. On May 22, they plan to visit the US Supreme Court, and the Law Library of Congress. The visit will conclude on May 23 with a briefing and tour at the Organization of American States (OAS).

On April 30, the Brazil-US Legal and Judicial Studies Program welcomed Chief Justice Luis Roberto Barroso of the Supreme Court of Brazil for a critical discussion on the judiciary's role in upholding democratic institutions and resisting authoritarianism. As democratic norms around the world come under increasing pressure, his leading voice in the protection of Brazil's electoral process offered critical insights into the challenges facing modern democracies and the importance of an independent judiciary in defending the rule of law.

On March 28, the Harvard International Law Review published "The Charming Betsy Canon: Time to Ride the Tide of Loper Bright," an article co-authored by AUWCL Professor Michael Jacobson and J.D. Candidate Stephen Finan. The article explores how federal judges have recently applied the canon to interpret domestic statutes, the canon's insulation from historic critiques of interpretative tools, its endorsement by textualist judges, and it provides guidance on how judges should apply it going forward.

Last week, American University Washington College of Law proudly sponsored the 27th annual Grotius Lecture featuring Stanford Law Professor E. Tendayi Achiume and distinguished discussant Jamil Dawkar. The lecture titled “Traditions and Transitions: For Whom is International Law?” discussed the use of the United Nations Human Rights mechanisms in addressing racial discrimination and xenophobia, drawing on their respective experiences as former Special Rapporteur and Director of the Human Rights Program at ACLU.
