On July 22, we celebrated the one year anniversary of the historic graduation ceremony where 24 Black Deaf students from Kendall School Division II were given their high school diplomas that were denied to them more than 70 years ago due to discrimination.
The July 22 gathering brought together more than 60 guests to the Kellogg Conference Center Hotel for a time to remember and reflect in community on Kendall 24 Day.
A mini-exhibit displayed renderings of the forthcoming Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens: A Legacy to Black Deaf Children, which will be the world’s largest monument to the Black Deaf community as well as an outdoor learning space.

Authority Magazine’s Young Change Makers: Our very own Trent Mora shares his “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” when it comes to debating and why?
1. Organization is key.
2. Not all feedback is equal.
3. It is not about creating the ultimate argument but creating the BEST argument you can.
4. Almost anything can be framed one way or another.
5. Stay focused on the billion-dollar question. The million-dollar question is what and why; the billion-dollar question is how.

Can you believe there’s only 1 month left until the Fall 2024 semester? Who’s excited and ready for it?
We sure are! 🦬🦬🦬
Get your Aha! faces ready – just five days remaining until STAMP Summer Bridge!
We’re pretty confident our Jumpstart students will figure out “the human knot” team building exercise next week.... just like we’re confident these emerging signers will be day-one ready for an immersive ASL experience this fall!
Only 5 more days left!
Meet Elijah Henderson, ‘22! Upon graduating, the communication studies major worked with Gallaudet’s in-house career coordinator to apply for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Workforce Recruitment Program. Within days, the talented young Bison was fielding inquiries from several federal agencies!
He began his career as a program support specialist with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in D.C., and today, he works with the U.S. Department of Labor on Section 508 compliance, IT onboarding, and safety and health programs.
Congratulations, Elijah!
Renowned Deaf artist, Nancy Rourke has been working on a large mural on the west wall of the National Deaf Life Museum space in Chapel Hall at Gallaudet since early June.
The eight-panel mural will depict seven Indigenous figures, representing the two tribes from the Washington, D.C. area, the Piscataway and the Nacotchtank. Learn more about it at: gu.live/cDNSg
Start the countdown! Just 10 days remaining until we take Gally’s newest crop of future environmental scientists, epidemiologists, and cybersecurity experts into the wild during the STAMP Summer Bridge Program.
Each summer, Gallaudet faculty hosts incoming first-year students pursuing science, technology, or mathematics fields for a 4-week immersion program that serves as an on-ramp to life at Gallaudet. Live in the residence halls, hit D.C. hotspots, hang out with your future professors and peers – there’s no better way for Bison scientists to hit the ground running.
Raise your hand if you’re pumped for JumpStart! We can’t wait to welcome our emerging signers in just 10 days. Remember, no matter your background or signing ability, you have a home at Gallaudet!
Today marks 72 years since Mrs. Louise B. Miller and other parents of Black Deaf children won the Miller v. the D.C. Board of Education case, opening the door to educational access for Black Deaf children in Washington, DC.
Mrs. Miller is an overlooked hero whose fight against segregation within Deaf education helped pave the way for the Brown v. Board of Education Topeka decision.

This week, the Gallaudet University debate team had the opportunity to compete in the Transatlantic Dialogues for Future Leaders at École de Guerre in Paris, France.
Gallaudet debaters Aubrie Bauer and Lorelei Becktel represented the university at the third and final tournament of the 2024 Transatlantic Dialogues. Although the team did not make it to the finals, our very own Lorelei won 2nd best speaker at the tournament.
Congratulations to both Aubrie and Lorelei for representing our Gallaudet Bison across the seas!
Surrounded by other parents, Tiffany Scofield was watching her son fulfill his college dream at Gallaudet’s new student orientation when it dawned on her:
A college degree was 𝒉𝒆𝒓 dream, too.
So she enrolled in Gallaudet’s Online Degree Completion Program, which offers students with at least 45 college credit hours the ability to finish their bachelor’s online.
“The online classes have been a game changer for me in balancing my roles as a student, a mom, and a full-time employee,” she said. “The program’s flexibility, accessibility, and resources have allowed me to manage my responsibilities while staying committed to my education. If that dream is still out there for you, know this: it’s never too late!”
Two recent graduates of our very own master’s degree program in accessible human-centered computing (AHCC) have been offered private sector jobs.
• Molly Feanny is assuming the role of Senior Advisor, Machine Learning Engineer at Dell, where she also interned last summer.
• Alison Nana will be a UX (user experience) Research Lead Senior Associate at JPMorgan, shaping product design for the financial services firm.
Also, Procter & Gamble has committed to having three interns from the AHCC program.
Congratulations to Molly and Alison, and to the program faculty!

The Google Doodle for August 19 features Dorothy “Dot” Miles, ’61, a well-known sign language poet, performer, and political activist from Wales. It appears on what would have been Miles’ 93rd birthday. Created by Korean American Deaf artist Youmee Lee, the Doodle shows Miles signing “follow the sun from rise to set, or bounce it like a ball” from her poem Language for the Eye.
34 years ago today, on July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. Many members of the Gallaudet community advocated for this law. Thanks to the ADA, Deaf individuals have been provided with greater opportunities and continue to achieve more than ever before.

Happy National DeafBlind Awareness Week! Did you know that Pro-Tactile ASL is a language that is communicated entirely through touch? It emerged in the early 2000s as DeafBlind individuals came together to form stronger communities. Were you aware that Gallaudet’s very own Brain Language Lab (BL2) is actively studying how the brain can adapt and change when individuals learn new languages or use different forms of communication? The research on languages like Pro-Tactile ASL not only benefits the DeafBlind community but also has the potential to enhance education and resources for everyone. #DeafBlindAwareness Video Credit: Quartz News
Charles’ story is 100% true. Every job that appealed to him required a college degree. So if you’re stuck too, know this: the best day to decide to go back to college was yesterday. The next best day? Today.
