Still in a season of celebration at the Howard University School of Education! 🎓 Standing in front of the newly renovated Myrtilla Miner Building, our graduates join a long line of educators formed in a space that once trained Black teachers for segregated schools and now houses innovative programs for future educators and local youth. The legacy continues with every Bison educator who crosses this stage.

They’re joined by Interim Dean Scott Dantley, Interim Provost Dawn Williams, and our 2026 Honors and Awards Ceremony speaker, Dr. Na’ilah Suad Nasir, President of the Spencer Foundation, alongside School of Education faculty who champion their success in and beyond the classroom. Together, they represent the past, present, and future of Black education, and the communities our graduates will go on to teach, lead, and serve.

Please join us in celebrating Charleston Yanders, Howard University School of Education’s Student of the Year, selected by his peers in the Graduate School Assembly! 🎓

Charleston is a Ph.D. student in the Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies program whose scholarship and professional work focus on equity, student success, leadership, and institutional responsibility in higher education, with a particular emphasis on HBCUs and historically underserved communities.

As a Graduate Assistant, Freshman Seminar Fellow, Academic and Career Advisor, and emerging scholar, Charleston has supported students through advising, mentorship, graduation readiness, and institutional engagement. These experiences have shaped his passion for strengthening student support systems, increasing access to academic resources, and promoting equity-centered practices across higher education. His research explores leadership visibility, identity, and belonging in higher education, particularly for Black LGBTQ+ professionals aspiring to senior-level administrative roles.

Guided by Howard University’s mission of truth and service, Charleston continues to use his scholarship, professional practice, and lived experiences to uplift students, advance equity, and strengthen student support systems across higher education.

72 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education reshaped the American educational landscape. 🏛️✨

This landmark case is deeply rooted in the legacy of Howard University, where legal visionaries and “social engineers” like Charles Hamilton Houston and Thurgood Marshall developed the strategy to challenge educational inequity.

At the Howard University School of Education, we carry that legacy forward. We don’t just study history, we prepare the next generation of educators, leaders, and advocates committed to advancing educational equity for every child. 🛡️📚

Today, we don’t just remember. We recommit.
