Student Body Government of Gallaudet University

We, Student Body Government, are livid by the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others. We are furious by the years of oppression, brutality, and struggle that lingered for black individuals. We question why this keeps happening. The better question is - when will this ever end? It can, and will stop by tasking the forces together. It is time for us to break the silence and dig into this significant issue.

How to Hug During a Pandemic

Gallaudet University stands in solidarity with the community that we must continue to work together fighting for social justice and finding solutions. In the work of continuing to address injustice, self-care is still needed. Hugs has been a no no due to the pandemic which is difficult for many of us since this is part of Deaf culture. We miss hugs and NEED them as it helps reduce stress by calming our sympathetic nervous system.

It is still risky to hug now but here are some tips for the safest ways to hug and please always wear a mask.
*Do hug facing opposite directions.
*Do let children hug you around the knees or waist.
*Hold your breath, make your hug quick then back up
at least 2 meter to chat.
*Avoid touching others’ body or clothing with your
face and mask.

Choose your hugs wisely and keep washing your hands! :)

Of the many things we miss from our pre-pandemic lives, hugging may top the list. We asked scientists who study airborne viruses to teach us the safest way to hug.

#GUDenimDay is TOMORROW!

[Kai: Hello! Today is April 29th and do you know what is the occasion?

No?!

Kai: It is Denim Day! Do you know what it is?

No?!

Kai: It's for the people who go through this horrific experience such as rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and molesting. They reported the rape but the Judge said that they asked for it is because they were wearing tight jeans. They didn't ask for it and we can wear whatever we want. Right? (holding many jeans and throwing jeans to the camera). I would like for us to recognize this awareness together. (Kai's hand was covered to the camera). Hashtag #GUDenimDay with your jeans on Wednesday, April 29th to show your support. You can also send the video or pictures to Kai Miller at [email protected] Please feel free to reach out to the Office of Title IX if you have any questions or need our resources to support you or others.]

We hope you can wear jeans with a purpose by taking a picture of yourself with jeans or the jeans itself with the hashtag #GUDenimDay to share the photos with others to show your support for the survivors.

Good tip by a student on how to stay productive! :)

👋Hey bisons!👋 We know it can be hard to stay at home when it is required🤯😴 but here’s a tip how you can stay productive!🤓
🙌
🙌
Transcript:
(Scene opens with Obaidullah Bakali doing his homework in the seat uncomfortably, feeling restless and frustrated.)

(Scene transitions to Obaidullah sitting in his room with a black desk and grey laptop in front of him.)

Obaidullah: Hi! School is closed during COVID-19. You must be staying home, but you feel stuck that you aren’t able to focus on your online class and homework. The best tip for you to stay productive is to set up an office space like this. It can be in your room, game room, or any room that you think you can set up.

Obaidullah: Next, I have a black board right-side wall that is for note stickers. I suggest you get note stickers and write down your homework, projects, or any tasks that you need to complete and put them on the board like my black board.

Obaidullah: Also, you don’t have to do your homework alone in your office space all day. You can call your friends or classmates because they might feel the same way as you, needing to stay productive while doing homework. Gallaudet provides a free Zoom software you can use! You can call them from your phone, laptop or iPad. I have an iPad I use for Zoom video chat where I can talk with my friends. And my laptop for my homework. Use them simultaneously to pretend as you are in the classroom.

Obaidullah: You don’t have to do your homework all day. For example, you can set up 2 hours for work then spend time with your family, workout or do your hobbies then come back to work again.

(Obaidullah does different things during the day to keep him busy).

Obaidullah: I’m done for the day! This is how I do my schedule during quarantine. Please stay at home and don’t forget to wash your hands. Now, I’m going to watch a movie on Netflix!

(Scene transitions to Obaidullah watching a movie on his laptop in bed. Scene fades out in black.)
