THINK Big for Academics Challenge
Richard Crosbie '65 is challenging all alumni to make a gift of $5 or more to the academic department that means the most to them. The top four academic departments with the most donors by 11:59 p.m. EST will receive $1,250 in bonus funds for their departments. (Winning departments will be announced within seven business days of W&J Day of Giving.)

Attention all W&J Chemists and Alum! Here's a challenge that we've won the past TWO years in a row. If you're able to contribute anything (even just $5), it is very much appreciated! It's the number of donors that matters so please help us achieve the highest number!

It’s only 8:30 a.m., and first 100 of our donors have already unlocked the first $5,000 in the 500 Presidents for $45,000 Challenge AND $2,500 to the W&J Fund for our Early-Bird Challenge! Will you join in and help us unlock the next $5,000? Make a gift here: jayconnected.com/WJ-GIVE

Hosfelt and Richards et al. discover that an FDA-approved antiviral drug called telaprevir inhibits chaperone activation by cofactors in bacteria, and in doing so, it can increase bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics and reduce the likelihood of drug resistance.

STEM Fest in downtown Wash, PA was this past Saturday. W&J Chemistry did an activity involving paper marbling. Using a denser "thick" water and special paints mixed with surfactants, kids create beautiful chaotic designs with paint spread on water, transferring them to paper. Thank you to all our chemistry students who came and made this such a successful event. Our booth won a "Best of the Best" prize!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR W&J SCIENCE STUDENTS!

STEM Fest is next Saturday (Sept 18) from 10 am - 3 pm at the Community Pavilion in downtown Washington. Interested in volunteering for an hour? Contact our SAACS Chemistry Club at [email protected] if you're interested. We'll be making marbled paper, a fun art activity based on density and surface chemistry.

Great opportunity to meet other W&J students - volunteering at events like this is also something you can put on a resume or talk about in a personal statement.

A festival for the entire family geared toward students K through 12. It's an opportunity for professionals and educators to share their knowledge and interest for science and technology with our youth.

What did W&J Science Students do this summer?

Neil Pandit (Neuroscience with a minor in Conflict & Resolution Studies, Class of 2023) is working a second summer for for State Representative Kenneth Gordon, a Massachusetts House of Representatives member. He continued his work looking at ways to improve primary health care access in western Massachusetts, a rural and underserved area of the Commonwealth. This involved examining the existing tuition remittance program for primary health professionals. Neil also looked at ways to ensure that existing PCPs and primary health professionals would be able to receive funding to continue their practice through state allocations of federal COVID-19 relief funding and the provider relief fund. Neil received a W&J Magellan Franklin Internship Award to support his internship. He will also be receiving the honor of a citation from the House for his work. Congratulations, Neil!

What did W&J Science Students do this summer?

Akansha Das (Biochemistry, Class of 2024) interned with Dr. Judy Chang at Magee-Women's Research Institute. Working remotely, she qualitatively coded and analyzed primary prenatal visits for evidence of racial bias, stereotyping, and microaggressions. Akansha investigated how this could impact the quality of care that marginalized patients receive. Congrats on landing this competitive internship!
