A curated list of notable avant-garde cinema presented in 16mm film and commented on by Steven Haines of Flea Market Films, with the assistance of our own Samuel Stanton.
When we think of a 'movie,' there are many common elements that come to mind: recognizable stars, containing narratives that resolve in about two hours, classic genres of action, romance, or comedy. However, the history of the motion picture also includes films that swim against the current commercial mode. These rebellious works have gone by many names: independent, avant-garde, experimental, film poems. Poetic films deliberately subvert audience expectations of conventional narratives. They encourage contemplation and focus in a world filled with distractions vying for your attention. Join us at 7:30PM on September 24, 2026 in the Olin Fine Arts Center for a collection of films that will challenge your definition of a movie and encourage you to slow down and reflect.

Most people who say they don’t like Shakespeare just haven’t seen it done well, or they have only read his plays. To really get Shakespeare, you need to see it done live by someone who can translate all that flowery language into gestures and body language to help the audience follow along. When the actors understand what they’re saying, and the lines are delivered with the right intonation, you will catch all the ridiculousness and raunchy jokes that Shakespeare is known for. Grounded and true to William Shakespeare’s popular play, knowing exactly what to keep and what to leave out, Tim tells the beloved story of these “star-crossed lovers” without the unnecessary baggage in less than 60 minutes. Dressed simply in black on a stage that is bare except for two velvet-draped chairs, Tim portrays thirteen key characters with impressive precision without the use of gimmickry, Frequently switching between characters at a rapid-fire pace, the transitions are seamless and identities never getting lost in the shuffle. All the well-known words we know and love are here and Tim has given them new life.
