Meet BARB SHEPARD, one our student representatives to the Board of Trustees!

Barb Shepard of Cedar Falls, Iowa, is currently enrolled in the Liberal Arts Transfer Major at Hawkeye Community College. She previously graduated with her Associate of Applied Science in Accounting in May 2026, and anticipates completing her Associate of Arts in May 2027.

Outside the classroom, Barb is a member of the Student Leadership Council, serving as their activities assistant, and is involved with Hawkeye’s chapter of Business Professionals of America. She is also an accounting tutor.

She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community college students, and Tri-Alpha, the honor society for first-generation college students.

β€œHawkeye has many wonderful opportunities for students,” Barb said. β€œAs a non-traditional student, I am grateful to have been able to participate in several of them.”

Off campus, Barb works as bookkeeper for her family business and serves as secretary for the College Hill Conservatory Board. After graduating this spring Barb plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

β€œIt was important to me to serve as a student representative to the Board of Trustees because I wanted to learn more about how the college operates and makes important decisions,” she said.

Meet KYNDRA CUMMINGS, one our student representatives to the Board of Trustees!

Kyndra Cummings of Cedar Falls, Iowa, is a student in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Hawkeye Community College with an anticipated graduation date of May 2027.

She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community college students, and the American Student Nursing Association.

Outside of school, Kyndra works as a licensed practical nurse (LNP) at MercyOne’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A native of Waterloo, she volunteers at the Cedar Bend Humane Society, the Waverly Health Center, and at various events hosted by MercyOne, UnityPoint–Allen Hospital, Downtown Waterloo, and the local food bank.

β€œI chose to become a student representative to get more involved on campus and interact with the other students,” Kyndra said. β€œI hope to gain strong leadership skills, better communication skills, and strengthen my advocacy skills. Being able to see the way decisions are made on campus and be the bridge between the board and the students is a perspective I do not get from being a student alone.”

After graduating from Hawkeye she plans to transfer to the University of Iowa to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing while continuing to work in the ICU.

SIM MOM DIARIES: Priscilla SIM had sirens outside her window! 🚨

"Things got incredibly intense in the hallway today. My neighbor Stan suffered a sudden simulated cardiac event in his bed. From my doorway, I watched our Hawkeye Community College Paramedic students rush in and take him to the ambulance. They worked at lightning speed to secure his vitals and stabilize him. Watching them handle high-stress situations makes me realize how elite this Paramedic program is."

Our first-year Hospitality Management students had an incredible, in-depth tour of the Waterloo Convention Center today.
The absolute best part?
Waterloo Convention Center

Our tour guide was one of our very own alumni. Emily Gefaller graduated with her 2-year Hospitality Management degree and has already been promoted to Sales Manager. Emily was an outstanding student and a fantastic leader during her time with us, and she clearly has the drive to rule this industry.
Thank you so much, Emily Gefaller- the students learned so much from you today.
