Dr. David Brown (known to the students as "Chief") is another professor in our music department. He teaches harmony and arranging courses, Music Appreciation, Conducting, and directs the Symphonic Band and Madrigal Choir.
Dr. Brown says, "the most gratifying part of teaching here is seeing the ongoing fruit of our ministry. Going to various schools and churches and seeing graduates faithfully serving is a great source of encouragement to me!" He loves seeing graduates take on a love for ministry and build that love into others.
"Oh, and the other thing I love about teaching here is having adjacent studios with the world's best piano teacher (Mrs. Ruth Brown)! We have fun teaching together!"
One piece of advice for Music Students: You have chosen to "Major" in music. That word "Major" implies that just about everything else in your life needs to take a back seat to your music. For example, music majors shouldn't simply attempt to make their music to "fit in" around the other stuff of life (coffee shop, sporting events, fun with friends, etc.). The practice hours, music theory work, music history work, rehearsals, etc. are your main job. The other "good things" are "MINOR" compared to these "MAJOR" things. Therefore, the practice hours (which should be scheduled like any other class is scheduled) are non-negotiables. Nothing takes priority over this. Nothing. If you are invited to the coffee shop, simply say, "I'd love to join you but we'll need to find a different time. That hour is a practice hour and I'm never free during my practice hours."
Fun Fact About Chief: "I really enjoy deer hunting (both with my bow and with my r***e). I once counted 21 deer during a faculty meeting (on the other side of the soccer field). It was killing me! I really wanted to be out there hunting them! Ha! Perhaps I should have been paying better attention to the presenter during the meeting."
