Here’s a look at what Thomas College Professor Michael Schrimpf was up to this summer!

Professor Schrimpf shared his research on Antarctic seabirds during a talk at the Grafton Public Library in Wisconsin, titled “Penguins, Petrels, and Albatross: What It’s Like to Study Antarctic Birds.” He spoke about his PhD and postdoctoral research at Cornell, where he studied similar topics.

He also co-authored a new paper examining thousands of seabird sightings collected through the eBird app during a research voyage to the waters around Marion Island, south of South Africa. The study explores how volunteer observers collect data at sea and how scientists can account for differences in reporting and detectability when using citizen-science data.

From spectacular albatross sightings to the statistical patterns hidden in thousands of observations, Professor Schrimpf’s work brings together field biology, citizen science, and data analysis to better understand the remarkable birds of the Southern Ocean.

Our inaugural Science of K9 Searching & Detecting Summer Camp brought together high school students for five days of hands-on learning, discovery, and teamwork. Throughout the week, campers explored the science behind canine scent detection, learned reward-based training principles, studied animal behavior, and worked alongside experienced instructors and incredible K9 partners.

"It’s been great, everyone has been so welcoming. I’ve taken other classes like this before, but this one really stands out. I’ve been looking for a camp at this advanced level, and it’s been exactly what I was hoping for."

From classroom discussions to field demonstrations, students gained valuable insight into the many careers where working dogs make a difference, including search and rescue, public safety, healthcare, and forensic science.
