Colby College English Department

Colby College English Department Colby English The Colby English Department welcomes the opportunity for discussion, individual attention and self-initiative in the classroom.

We thrive upon the ability to develop personal relationships with members of the faculty, who are highly accomplished in their scholarship, teaching, and literary productions. Our graduates find themselves well prepared for professional schools of law, medicine, and business, as well as for careers in communication, industry, and government. Some majors become teachers; some become writers; some g

o into journalism, publishing, library science or one of the many other fields that depend on professionals with sophisticated analytical and verbal skills.

The Jan plan trip to Edith Wharton’s estate in the Berkshires of Massachusetts was a big success for students in EN413 - Author Course: Edith Wharton.

On Tuesday, January 10th, we took a long tour (which included an examination of the servants’ quarters—we’ve been focusing on her representations of working-class characters), had a lovely catered lunch in the gallery, and then held class in her drawing room. We discussed The House of Mirth, which she wrote while living at the Mount. (It was fun to see the very spot where she penned it while lying in bed!)
