September is National Firefighter Appreciation Month!

From the firefighters serving across north central Wisconsin to the students training for careers in fire service at NTC, we’re grateful for the courage, commitment and countless hours of preparation that go into protecting others.

NEW!

This degree prepares graduates to design, build and deploy practical AI-powered applications. Learners begin with a strong software development core and build specialized skills in data mining and predictive analytics, large language models and AI agents, edge AI and robotics, and responsible, ethical use of AI in organizations.

Through hands-on labs and applied projects, students learn to integrate AI capabilities into real software systems, communicate technical tradeoffs, and apply governance practices that address privacy, bias, security and operational risks.

We were pleased to welcome Senator Tammy Baldwin to NTC for a conversation about the future of Wisconsin’s workforce.

During the visit, we shared updates on NTC’s Firefighter/Paramedic Apprenticeship program and discussed how we’re exploring and applying artificial intelligence in workforce training to help employers and employees prepare for a changing workplace.

Thank you to Senator Baldwin for taking the time to learn more about these efforts and discuss the workforce needs and opportunities shaping our region.

Turn logs into lumber while building skills that apply across modern sawmill operations.

NTC’s Mill Technology Certificate Program offers an immersive, hands-on opportunity to learn the fundamentals of lumber manufacturing using the state-of-the-art equipment in NTC’s training sawmill at the Wood Technology Center of Excellence in Antigo.

September 28–October 30, 2026
Monday–Friday | 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Throughout the program, participants will gain practical experience in:

• Log identification, scaling, and grading
• Hardwood lumber grading
• Sawmill safety and operator maintenance
• Lumber manufacturing, including sawing, edging, and trimming
• Kiln drying and mill operations
• Quality control and industry metrics

Training takes place in a commercial-scale sawmill environment, giving participants hands-on experience with equipment including a 54" double-cut band headrig, horizontal resaw, optimized edger, and double-end trimmer.

New this year: flexible training options. Complete the full Mill Technology Certificate or choose focused course bundles in hardwood grading, lumber manufacturing and sawmill safety, or kiln and mill operations.

With an emphasis on hands-on learning, the full program is limited to 12 participants.
