Halifax Community College

Halifax Community College HCC is a public, two-year educational institution with an open-door admissions policy. Taylor was appointed. Newbern Jr. Gasper Jr. Griffin Sr.

• In 1967, Halifax County Technical Institute was chartered.

• In 1968, the institute’s first president, Dr. Phillip W. In this same year, full-time students
were enrolled in business administration, secretarial science and automotive programs for the first time.

• In 1972, the board of trustees approved the purchase of a 109-acre tract of land in Halifax County for the
institu

te’s location.

• In 1976, the institute became known as Halifax Community College.

• In 1977, HCC moved to its new location in Weldon, where formal ceremonies were held.

• In 1986, the Technology Development Center (now the Workforce and Economic Development Center) was
built, which included classrooms, offices, a small business center, an auditorium and spacious bays for
industrial training.

• In 1987, a student activity center opened, housing a campus bookstore and student lounge.

• In 1988, Dr. Elton L. was appointed president of the institution.

• In 1990, the Student/Nursing Education Center was constructed.

• In 1994, the Literacy/Science Education Center was completed.

• In 1996, the Child Care Center/Classroom Building was constructed.

• In 1998, the HCC Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Theodore (Ted) H. as president.

• In 2002, construction began on the Allied Health/ Multipurpose Building.

• In 2003, construction on a new wellness center began. In that same year, The Centre opened as northeastern
North Carolina’s premier multipurpose venue.

• In 2006, Dr. Ervin V. started his tenure as the fourth president of HCC.

• In 2009-10, HCC formed a partnership with North Carolina Central University, the former Halifax Regional
Medical Center, now Vidant North, and the Upper Coastal Plains Learning Council to establish an RN2BSN
program. This program was designed to help registered nurses earn BS Degrees in Nursing from North
Carolina Central University.

• In 2012, the State Board of Education and the State board of Community Colleges established the Career and
College Promise program.

• In March 2016, North Carolina passed the Connect NC Bond proposal. HCC’s portion was
$6.5 million to build a new Advanced Manufacturing and Corporate Training Center to
house programs in Automotive Technologies, Welding Technologies and Industrial Systems
Technologies.

• In 2017, Dr. Michael A. Elam started his tenure as the fifth president of HCC.

• An access road was completed in 2018, making access to the College easier and providing an additional exit in
case of emergency.

• In 2019, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Advanced Manufacturing and Corporate Training Center was
held.

• In 2020, construction of the Advanced Manufacturing and Corporate Training Center began.

• In 2021, the Advanced Manufacturing and Corporate Training Center held it's grand opening.

• In 2023, Dr. Patrena B. Elliott started her tenure as the sixth president of HCC. Dr. Elliott made history by
becoming the college's first female president.

Join the Halifax Community College Counseling Center for its Inaugural Hope, Healing, and Recovery Resource Fair, held in recognition of National Recovery Month and National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

This special event will bring together resources, information, and support to promote mental wellness, recovery, hope, and connection throughout our campus and community.

Together, we can raise awareness, reduce stigma, connect individuals with valuable resources, and remind one another that hope and help are always within reach.
