Languages & Cultures Day is almost here!
Join us Tuesday, October 6, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on the Mitchell Hall Lawn for an afternoon celebrating the languages and cultures represented across our WCU community.

Faculty Spotlight: Meet Dr. Laquana Cooke, Professor of English at !

Dr. Cooke is a professor of digital rhetoric whose teaching and scholarship explore digital learning, game design, cultural identity, equity, and the ways Black youth and communities use creative practice to imagine social change. She is also the founding director of ICamp Wcu and co-founder of Media Ed Tech Institute.

Her recent accomplishments include serving as co-executive producer of The Hands That Shape Tomorrow, a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award-winning project, and publishing her latest book, Meta-Tuning Justice: Game Design and Black Youth Agency with University of Massachusetts Press.

Join Dr. Cooke for a book signing and discussion on Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m. in Philips Memorial Hall’s Autograph Library. Light refreshments will be served, and a limited number of registered attendees will receive a free signed book.

We’re proud to spotlight Dr. Cooke and the scholarship, storytelling, and creative work she brings to our WCU community.

A big congratulations to Sophie Stair, our 2026 College of Arts & Humanities Outstanding Student Award recipient! 🎉

Sophie is a member of the Class of 2027, majoring in English with a minor in Journalism and Media & Culture. Beyond the classroom, she serves as Public Relations Officer for Sigma Tau Delta and Sports Editor for The Quad.

The Outstanding Student Award recognizes students who stand out through their academic achievement, creativity and contributions to the WCU community. We’re so excited to celebrate Sophie and all she continues to accomplish.

Meet our new Equity Communications Coordinator Intern, Maura (she/they)!

Maura is a fourth-year Graphic Design major with a minor in Information Technology. Outside of the classroom, she is the Director of Social Programs for Kappa Alpha Commuter Honors Society.

Maura loves going to concerts, traveling, reading, and spending time with friends and family!

We’re so excited to have Maura here with us this semester!

Faculty Spotlight: Meet Dr. Stefanie Amiruzzaman, ASL/Deaf Studies Coordinator and Assistant Professor in Languages and Cultures WCUPA at West Chester University!

Dr. Amiruzzaman teaches American Sign Language (ASL) and holds a Ph.D. in Evaluation and Measurement, an M.Ed. in Deaf Education and a B.A. in American Sign Language, all from Kent State University.

Before joining WCU, she taught ASL and Deaf culture courses at institutions including The University of Akron, Princeton University and Ball State University. She is also a certified member of the American Sign Language Teachers Association and is continuing an IRB-approved research project exploring AI and ChatGPT in the classroom.

Her recent accomplishments include receiving the 2025 Stephan M. Ryan Award from ASLTA and WCU’s 2025 Women’s Leadership Award, publishing Signs Are Everywhere Teacher’s Guide, and serving as Vice President of the Pennsylvania State Association of the Deaf.

We’re proud to spotlight Dr. Amiruzzaman and the teaching, research and leadership she brings to our WCU community.

New banner alert! 🚨
Have you seen the newest artwork outside Main Hall? This year’s three-panel banner was designed by Graphic and Interactive Design alumna Eleana Rudderow ’26, winner of the 2026–27 Main Hall Banner Contest.

Created around this year’s College of Arts and Humanities theme, “Arts and Humanities: Informing Our Shared History, Advancing Justice, Strengthening Communities,” Eleana’s design uses different forms of light to represent the past, present and future, and the ways knowledge continues to shape our communities over time.

Take a closer look the next time you’re at Main Hall. The layered design includes details inspired by WCU history, the arts and humanities, sustainability, progress and America250PA.
