Baker Annual: Regional Open Call

West Chester University’s Department of Art + Design is pleased to announce the first iteration of the Baker Annual, a regional open call exhibition juried by Leah Triplett and Libby Rosa. In the jurors’ selection of artworks, themes of addressing nature were observed, be it realistically examined or poetically abstracted. The proximity, be it distance or closeness, of interspecies relationships as well as between people and place broadly, is interrogated through a range of approaches to making and process. An opening reception will be held in the Joh H. Baker Gallery on September 9th, 2026, from 2:30-4:30pm, located at E.O. Bull Center for the Arts, 2 E Rosedale Ave, West Chester, PA 19383.

The Baker Annual includes of artworks by twenty-one artists from the region— Amira Pualwan, Amy Boone-McCreesh, Colleen McCubbin Stepanic, Diana Jean Puglisi, Eliza Clifford, Frankie Modesto, Hanna Vogel, Hannah Law, Hester Stinnett, Imogen Gosnell, Jacob Stevens, Jody Joyner, Jonathan Santoro, José Chavez-Verduzco, Kathleen Eastwood-Riaño, Lauren Whearty, Madeleine Speicher-Willis, Marilyn Stubblebine, Massiel Mafes, Molly Burt-Westvig, and Steven Valera.

West Chester University’s Department of Art + Design invites submissions to the 2026 exhibition Baker Annual: Open Call.
This juried exhibition seeks to highlight the vision, range, and innovation of artists working across the region of PA/DE/NJ/MD/NY.

Through this annual showcase, the Department of Art + Design aims to foster community engagement, promote dialogue across disciplines, and support artists who are shaping the evolving landscape of contemporary art. Artists are encouraged to submit work that expands or reimagines their chosen medium, contributing to a dynamic and forward-thinking exhibition.

Each artist is asked to submit three works to be reviewed by two jurors, Libby Rosa and Leah Triplett, who will select artwork to be curated into the exhibition. Required Non-Refundable Entry Fee $15 is required for up to three (3) submissions.

In addition to the exhibition, artists will be eligible for three awards granted by the jurors, in amounts of $300, $200, and $100 dollars.

Gwenivere Llewellyn’s exhibition “Ceramics in the Sheets” creates answers to the questions: What goes into making ceramic clay/glaze? How long does it take? In spring of 2024 Gwenivere started a project working on making not only a body of clay, but also a series of glazes. This entailed multiple days of measuring, mixing, testing, remeasuring, and more testing. While staring in 2024, the work to make clay and glaze still continues. This show walks you through the process of making ceramic clay/gaze from the raw materials needed to the multiple rounds of testing, to hopefully inspire you to try to make your own ceramics.

An exhibition of self-portraits created in acrylic paint and mixed media that illustrate my experiences and introspective thoughts on what makes “home” and the various roles within these homes that shape my identity.
This body of work reflects the bittersweet experience of honoring cultural traditions from my Ghanian-American heritage while unpacking the weight these carry in many facets of my life. Each portrait, through a convergence of cultural artifacts of patterns and other design elements, communicates an ambivalent tension. The feeling is hidden or plain in the work, depicting balancing familial responsibilities, following my passion, and breaking away from the confinement of expectation. My artwork shows my own path in being of and loving the complexity of my cultures and heritage while growing and developing in my uniqueness.

Blinkers

The exhibition Blinkers brings together eight artists whose practices center on
transformation and change. Through diverse media and formal experimentation, their
works highlight time, process, and the layered complexity of perception. In this exhibition,
process becomes presence, material carries metaphor, and identity emerges through both
the visible and hidden textures of making.
Like turning on a blinking turn signal, the artists in this show alert us to a heightened sense
of looking. On the foreground of these works, we encounter relationships of shape and
color, which evolve into complex relationships of grounded personal symbols, imaginative
forms, and material maneuvers.

This exhibition has been co-organized by Kris Benedict and Lauren Pakradooni. Works will
be on view from October 22nd until December 11th, 2025, in the John H Baker Gallery
located within the Department of Art + Design at West Chester University. The gallery is
open to the public from 8 am until 4 pm Monday-Friday at E.O. Bull Center for the Arts 2 E
Rosedale Ave, West Chester, PA 19383. The building is ramp accessible. The opening
reception will begin with an Artist’s talk at 4pm and conclude at 6pm on Wednesday,
October 22nd.

Confronting Wilderness
A Survey of Work

The Knauer Gallery at West Chester University is pleased to present John Day: Confronting Wilderness, from October 20, 2025, through December 12, 2025. The solo exhibition includes work in a variety of media, including assemblages, constructions, and drawings. Day has traveled to many forest preserves in the northeast US, and wilderness experience is the source for his work. His ideas are translated into large scale works that combine digital photographs of forest details, branches, paint, fabric, and text describing his encounters with wilderness. Some works comment on deforestation and the climate crisis. One work, Suspension, includes digital images of forests, industrial sites and all-inclusive portraits of people that speak to our current condition in the world.
