This semester, history majors in 241W History as Detection are using the "Doing History" series from the Ben Franklin's World podcast to think about how and why historians work as they do.

This week, the class discussed Episode 84, in which a historian shared how analyzing one mid-18th century portrait of an American woman led her to write a history of fashion, female artisans, imperialism, and transatlantic networks of trade.

The William and Mary Quarterly is the leading journal of early American history and culture. Founded in 1892 and published by the Omohundro Institute in Williamsburg, Virginia, it is one of the oldest academic journals in the United States and was one of the first ten archived on JSTOR.

In this case, the head of Microsoft talks about how people with liberal arts degrees - including history - will continue to be vital in developing smart, ethical artificial intelligence.

Microsoft's Brad Smith says that for AI to be effective, engineers need insights from psychology, literature, and the social sciences.

Aidan Levy, a celebrated Hall High graduate and now graduate student at Columbia University, will deliver a lecture on three prophets of our recent times: Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Lou Reed. His book “Dirty Blvd.: The Life and Music of Lou Reed” (2015) chronicles both the man Reed and Reed who has been called the “high priest of art rock.”

This evening is sponsored by the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford.

A group of Catholics, including some Americans, recently accused Pope Francis of heresy. Today in the Washington Post, Prof. Erin Bartram co-authors a piece on the 19th century American history of this accusation and the heresy at the center of it.
