βοΈ Alumni Spotlight: Keyokah Mars-Garrick '12, M'16 βοΈ
Keyokah Mars-Garrick is on a mission β and it starts in classrooms across the region.
A proud member of the Narragansett tribe, whose roots in Rhode Island stretch back over 30,000 years, Keyokah travels to schools sharing the living history, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous culture. From powwows to cultural touchstones like coyote skins and turtle shells, she brings Native American heritage to life for students who might never encounter it otherwise.
By day, she's a special education teacher at Wheeler High School in North Stonington, CT. By heart, she's a cultural ambassador β and a basketball coach, too.
Her dedication was recently recognized with UHart's 2026 MLK Beloved Community Award β making her the first Indigenous person to receive this honor at the university.
Her days are filled with purpose and gratification and it shows.
Keyokah holds a BA and MBA from UHart, plus a master's in education from UConn, and is already setting her sights on educational leadership as a future principal.
We're so proud to call her a Hawk. π¦
