Karen Corcoran, associate professor of Nursing and director of the USJ Mental Health program (PMHNP), will be recognized by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association Nurses Association (APNA) with its Award for Excellence in Education.

Corcoran will be honored at APNA’s Annual Conference this October. The organization’s annual awards recognize leaders in psychiatric mental health nursing who are advancing education, leadership, research, and patient care nationwide.

She is being awarded for her forward-looking approach to education, including “her ability to see what is coming in practice and create innovative, effective educational content to meet the needs of the rapidly changing clinical environment.”

Assistant Professor of Nutrition Margot Zaharek-Girgasky, Ph.D., R.D. shared valuable insight on the importance of balancing food access with long-term nutrition education in a recent article from The Food Institute discussing the proposed Hot Foods Act and potential changes to SNAP benefits.

Professor Zaharek-Girgasky noted that while expanding SNAP access to hot prepared foods could help address barriers faced by many families, nutrition education and cooking-skills programs remain essential components of long-term food security and healthy eating habits.
