Sometimes, we need help to discover our potential. After years of serving his country in the infantry, Refa Tomy Mukendi’s Army career ended with a medical discharge. He believed his options were limited.

But five years after a chance meeting with a college recruiter, Mukendi graduated from Purdue’s online Master of Science in Engineering Technology program in December 2025.

Now, a database engineer with J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Mukendi is on track to complete Purdue’s online Doctor of Technology program in 2027.

Meet Dr. Aaron Lottes — Assistant Dean for Engineering in Indianapolis and Professor of Engineering Practice in Biomedical Engineering.

His own path started right here at Purdue with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1997. From there he earned an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management in 2000 and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue in 2006. That mix of engineering, business and biomedical science is exactly what shapes his work today.

Dr. Lottes' research lives at the intersection of medicine and regulation. Think regulatory science for medical devices, real-world data and evidence, drug-eluting stents and treatment for peripheral artery disease. It's the kind of work that determines how new medical technologies actually make it into the hands of doctors and patients.

But ask his students, and they'll probably tell you about something else first: he's just a genuinely great teacher. Dr. Lottes has earned Purdue's Outstanding Engineering Teacher award seven times since 2021 — including all four terms in a row from Fall 2024 through Summer 2025.

He's also been recognized for bringing global perspective into the classroom, with grants supporting intercultural learning and study abroad experiences, along with pilot funding to expand engineering-medicine collaboration between Purdue and IU School of Medicine.

Bottom line: Dr. Lottes isn't just teaching biomedical engineering — he's teaching students how new medical technology transitions from an idea to something that actually saves lives.

Nobody tells you this part: going back to school doesn't mean your life hits pause.

You still have a job. A family. A schedule that was already full before you added "grad student" to the list. And somewhere around week three, something happens — the plan you made in your head for how studying was going to go? It changes.

That's exactly what Neil Hargrove learned earning his online Master's in Science of Education in Learning Design and Technology from College of Education, Purdue University.

"My one piece of advice is that your life situation will change while you are in graduate school," Neil says. "Something will happen and everything you had planned — the time you planned to spend studying — will change. You really just need to come into it with a flexible mindset, ready to make adjustments in how you're going to study or when you're going to accomplish your goals for that week."

Here's the part we love most: "Life just comes at you. It's still going on, even if you're online and you're basically living two different lives. You've got to be flexible when it comes to that."
