She spent years putting everyone else first. Then, she decided it was her turn.
As a single mom of three boys, Dongju Lee knew what it meant to work hard, make sacrifices and keep moving forward — even when life felt overwhelming.
After building a career in human resources and corporate training, moving her family from South Korea to the United States and supporting her three sons through their own journeys, Dongju decided to pursue a master’s degree of her own.
In 2020, she began Purdue’s online Master’s in Corporate Training and Communication while working full time and raising her family.
And she wasn’t doing it alone.
Her sons cheered her on. Her colleagues supported her. And through four years of late nights, busy schedules and countless responsibilities, Dongju kept going.
Along the way, she discovered a passion for communication and crisis communication — even putting what she learned into practice when her company faced a major litigation issue. Her newfound skills helped her play a critical role in developing the company’s response.
But perhaps the most meaningful moment came when it was finally time to graduate.
By then, all three of Dongju’s sons were pursuing their own dreams, including her oldest, Christopher, who was also a Purdue student.
And then something extraordinary happened: Mother and son graduated together.
Dongju walked across the stage to receive her master’s degree, while Christopher graduated from Purdue and was selected to speak at their commencement ceremony.
As Christopher shared his mother’s story with the crowd — telling them about her perseverance, dedication and everything she had sacrificed for her family — Dongju watched with tears in her eyes.
For years, she had encouraged her sons to chase their dreams.
This time, they got to watch her achieve hers.
Her story is a reminder that it’s never too late to invest in yourself, learn something new or take the next step toward the future you want.
And sometimes, the people you inspire the most are the ones standing beside you when you finally reach the finish line.
