🗣️June is Aphasia Awareness Month.

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write. It often occurs after a stroke or brain injury. What’s important to know: aphasia affects communication. Not intelligence.

At Purdue Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, we study how communication works, how it can be disrupted, and how clinicians support people in reconnecting with others.

Throughout June, we’ll share more about aphasia, communication access, and why understanding matters.

🎉Congratulations to our Purdue SLHS undergraduate researchers.

Undergraduate students Jillian Grace Robbins, Emma Grace Gutknecht, and Maya Therese Newton earned High Distinction at the Purdue Spring Undergraduate Research Conference for their project, “Types of speech errors produced by preschoolers.”

Mentored by Dr. Françoise Brosseau Lapré, associate professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, the students examined patterns in preschoolers’ speech production and how those patterns relate to early phonological development. This work contributes to a clearer understanding of how speech sound disorders are identified in early childhood.

📖 Research opportunity for families this summer

Purdue‑affiliated researchers are inviting rising 2nd and 3rd graders with reading difficulties to take part in the SOLAR Study, which looks at how children learn to read over the summer months.

Families receive a detailed reading skills report and $100 for completing both study visits.
