The Purdue Arboretum has a goal to recreate the Purdue campus as a living laboratory to enhance learning and discovery, and to improve its value as a resource for university engagement. As a public institution, The Purdue Arboretum seeks to serve the people of Indiana by providing a unique collection of plants, gardens, art works, walking trails, and green spaces that can be used and appreciated by the broadest segment of Indiana’s population. Success of The Purdue Arboretum will depend on significant involvement of faculty, staff, and students from across the campus, as well as individuals, community groups, and private organizations both locally and beyond.

Stepping onto the site to check in on Horticulture Park as the season turns! 🍂✨
We spent the day out on site reviewing how the space has evolved, analyzing current conditions, and gathering fresh insights for future development. Excited to see how these observations shape the next phase of our design! 🌿📐

Classroom standard: Outdoors. 🌿🐝

Our Landscape Architecture juniors took a deep dive into the Jules Janick Horticulture Garden right outside the Horticulture Building today! The mission? Observing pollinator dynamics in real-time to design smarter, ecology-driven landscapes.

Great landscape architecture isn’t just about aesthetic layout—it’s about creating working micro-ecosystems. By mapping which species visit specific plants, our students are gathering site data to design habitats that actively support local biodiversity.

Quick Pollinator Breakdown:
Bumblebees & Honeybees: Nature’s heavy lifters, relying on target flowers for nectar and pollen transport.
Butterflies & Moths: Attracted to vibrant blooms, serving as vital indicators of overall plant health.
Hoverflies & Solitary Bees: Essential native pollinators that thrive when given multi-layered plant structures.
Designing for the future means designing for the creatures that keep it growing. 🚂💛🖤

Proof that the smallest beings make the biggest difference in our world 🐝🌸✨

Biodiversity is what keeps our planet thriving, and we have our tiny pollinator friends to thank for so much of it! Bees work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the plants we love healthy, safe, and blooming year after year. And butterflies? Beyond being pure magic to watch, they’re incredible pollinators keeping our green spaces alive and growing 🦋💚

Protect the little guys—they’re holding the whole ecosystem together! 🌼🌱

We’ve had such a fun time hosting tours out at Horticulture Park for high schoolers and grad students. Pointing out our favorite plantings, talking wildlife habitat, and sharing the biodiversity of our park with possible future outdoor majors has been a highlight!

Looking forward to many more tours to come. Interested in setting up a visit for yourself or a group? Reach out anytime! 🌲☀️

Bumblebees are critical pollinators for both wild plants and agriculture crops. They are a big help in maintaining plant diversity, supporting food webs, and helping to ensure the reproduction of many species. 🐝 🌺

Meet Franny, one of our favorite regular visitors here at Horticulture Park! 🦌✨ We are so lucky to share our space with her and her three adorable babies, who you can spot out and about on the daily, taking family walks and chowing down in the woods. Franny is getting more and more used to our community and is incredibly approachable, but remember to always give her a respectful wave from a safe distance. Next time you’re out here for a stroll, make sure to keep an eye out for this sweet family! 💚
