"I never even considered research ever. I didn't even know it was like a thing. But the minute I stepped in the lab, it was like, wow, this is very cool." – Mary Brunkow

All three of the 2025 medicine laureates were headed towards becoming medical doctors before changing course to pursue research. In this episode of our podcast: Nobel Prize Conversations, host Adam Smith speaks with Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi about being hooked by a scientific problem and then working at it for years. They discuss the connection between curiosity for the natural world and science, the cultural differences between scientific careers in the United States and Japan and how they turned their observations into discoveries that changed immunology.

Research isn’t about getting everything right the first time.
It’s about learning from the mistakes and continuing forward.

Dr. D. Marshall Porterfield, professor in reminds us that innovation begins when failure becomes learning.

Keep going. You may be closer than you think.
