The School of Materials Engineering (MSE), which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009, is one of the smaller schools in Purdue’s College of Engineering, with just over 1,800 living alumni. The School prepares students to excel in applications and innovations for metals, polymers, ceramics and electronic materials, and a degree in MSE means graduates are qualified and sought after to work in alm

📢 The Purdue University School of Materials Engineering is pleased to welcome Christopher A. Schuh, Dean of Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, as the featured speaker for the 2026 Winchell Distinguished Lecture.

Schuh's presentation, "The Coming Age of Computationally Designed Grain Boundary Chemistry," will explore how computational tools and data-driven approaches are opening new possibilities in the design of advanced materials.

A member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors, Schuh has made significant contributions to materials science and engineering throughout his career.

This summer, Purdue Materials Engineering welcomed more than 60 working professionals and graduate students to its accelerated online Lean Manufacturing immersion course, taught by Dr. Inna Elsner, Director of the Professional Master's Program in Materials Engineering.

Participants represented nearly 30 companies, national laboratories, the U.S. military, and a wide range of industries, disciplines, and leadership levels. While the course typically enrolls about 35 participants, this year's expanded cohort reflects growing interest in Lean principles and their application beyond traditional manufacturing environments.

Throughout the course, participants explored Lean as a holistic operating system, covering leadership, organizational culture, continuous improvement, supplier-customer relationships, and applications in product development and startup environments. The course also introduced AI prompting concepts as emerging tools to support structured feedback, iteration, and decision-making.

"One of the highlights of teaching this course is seeing Lean thinking and principles discussed and applied across such a diverse range of industries, organizations, and technical disciplines," said Dr. Elsner. "The discussions, examples, and team interactions made the learning experience richer for everyone."

The strong engagement underscores the value of Lean capability development and Purdue's commitment to supporting the evolving needs of today's workforce.
