📣 Join us for the 2026 SIAM Great Lakes Section Annual Meeting at Purdue University!
The SIAM Great Lakes Section Annual Meeting (GLSIAM) is coming to West Lafayette on September 19–20, 2026! This year’s meeting will bring together researchers, students, faculty, and professionals working across differential equations, computation, data science, and the physical and biological sciences.
There are several ways to participate and contribute to the program. Participants can:
🔹 Register for the meeting
🔹 Sign up for a poster session to showcase your research
🔹 Submit a speaker opportunity
🔹 Organize or participate in a mini symposium
Whether you’re looking to share your latest work, connect with researchers across disciplines, or engage with the broader applied mathematics community, we hope you’ll join us!

From cockroach milk to an Ig Nobel Prize. 🪳🏆

Purdue Biological Sciences professor Ramaswamy Subramanian, DECTRIS Japan's Leo Chavas and Nathan Coussens of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research have received the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research into how a species of cockroach nourishes its developing embryos.

Their 2016 study revealed the atomic structure of protein crystals formed from cockroach milk — an unusually concentrated source of nutrients for developing embryos.

The research may make you laugh, but the science is serious. And for Subramanian, the work continues to inspire new questions. At Purdue, he is exploring how the unusual stability of these proteins could inform biomolecular design using artificial intelligence and protein engineering.

The Ig Nobel Prizes recognize scientific achievements that make people “laugh, then think.” This research certainly does both. 🔬

Educators gained hands-on experience with tools at the Brick by Brick event by and LEGO Education. The workshop centered around AI integration in the classroom and how students can remain critical thinkers amid evolving technology, and educators each received kits to connect their classrooms with real-world innovation.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible!
