Our students haven't just been working over the summer, they've also been advancing their professional expertise! In July, Ag Ed senior Camille Thopy attended the National FFA Alumni & Supporters New Century Farmer Conference in Indianapolis. This conference is designed for FFA Alumni ages 18-24 who have a background or interest in production agriculture.

Camille said, "As 1 of 45 participants from across the country accepted to attend the conference, I was able to learn from and network with industry professionals, tour various types of agribusinesses, and craft a vision statement. I have found this conference instrumental in starting my own Dorper sheep operation, Rockin' CT Livestock, as well as knowledge to use to assist my students in starting and growing their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs)."

Way to go, Camille! We are excited to see how you use this experience to grow future opportunities for yourself and your students.

Meet Lyla Bannwart, today's Ag Ed Summer Highlight! Lyla is a sophomore in Agricultural Education. Here's what she had to say about her experience as an intern with LaPorte County 4-H:

"This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with my county’s Purdue Extension office. During my time at the Purdue Extension - LaPorte County, I quickly fell in love with the environment and the opportunity to educate and connect with youth outside of a traditional classroom setting. This experience showed me how impactful hands-on education and community involvement can be, and it has strengthened my passion for Agricultural Education and working with youth."

Today's Ag Ed Summer Highlight features Kasey Dulin, a Junior studying Agricultural Education. Kasey interned with Purdue Extension Warren County. Here's what she had to say about her experience:

"Throughout my internship I worked closely with 4-H youth, parents, and surrounding county interns and educators. My fellow intern and I attended the region's 4-H camp, prepared for and ran educational stations for the local Parks Program, and prepared for and assisted with the fair. Coming from a large county it was interesting to see the dynamic of a smaller county and the amazing connections everyone had! This experience has strengthened my passion for agricultural education and my eagerness to explore all opportunities that I encounter."

Today's summer Ag Ed highlight is of Lily Trinkle, senior in Agricultural Education. This summer she worked at Nutrien Ag Solutions in Saline, Michigan as a crop scout. Here's what Lily had to say about her experience:

"During my summer internship I gained hands-on experience in agronomy through field scouting, tissue testing, soil sampling, and delivering herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers to growers. I also researched crop growth for an intern project that I presented at the end of the summer, which helped grow my interest in research. One of my favorite parts of the internship was building relationships with local growers and helping educate them about the different products and services Nutrien offers. Overall, my internship experience gave me a deeper understanding of agronomy and helped me see a non-traditional form of agricultural education."

Today's Ag Ed Summer Highlight features incoming freshman Kaitlyn Kalbaugh! Kaitlyn is an Ag Ed major with minors in Political Science and Horticulture. This summer she worked at Bloomers Greenhouse in West Point, Indiana. Here's what she had to say about her experience:

"In this position, I assisted with greenhouse maintenance and plant production from seed to harvest. I also created floral arrangements to be sold at farmers markets, assisted with training new employees, and helped harvest a variety of crops, including kale, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and collard greens. Additionally, I served as the lead market worker at the Lafayette Farmers Market every Saturday starting in May. I have worked at Bloomers Greenhouse for two years.

Working at Bloomers Greenhouse has strengthened my understanding of greenhouse production and customer service within the agricultural industry. I have also developed a variety of skills and techniques related to plant production on a larger scale. These experiences have provided me with knowledge that I can use to educate and inspire my future students."

We are excited to welcome Kaitlyn to campus this week!
