Purdue Nuclear Engineering has dedicated a new Nuclear Fusion and Plasma Teaching Laboratory, giving students hands-on experience with experimental plasma science, diagnostics and fusion-related technologies. Made possible through a gift from alumnus Jerome W. “Jerry” Blattner (BSNE ’78) and his wife, Brenda, the laboratory strengthens Purdue’s commitment to preparing students for the future of fusion energy.

Twenty-four high school teachers from 10 states came to Purdue Nuclear Engineering for a three-day outreach program focused on nuclear energy, industry developments and career opportunities for students. Through technical lectures, hands-on laboratory experiences and conversations with nuclear professionals, educators gained firsthand knowledge they can bring back to their classrooms and share with the next generation of nuclear leaders.

Purdue Nuclear Engineering PhD candidate Konstantinos Prantikos, a graduate research assistant at Argonne National Laboratory, is helping advance AI-powered monitoring for next-generation nuclear reactors. As a co-author of the research, Prantikos is helping develop technology designed to detect subtle signs of blockages in heat exchangers before they escalate.

“AI is always on guard. It doesn’t sleep,” Prantikos said.

Argonne National Laboratory researchers proposed an AI-powered monitoring system that can spot blockages in the heat exchangers of molten-salt-cooled reactors in real time, helping prevent costly shutdowns and improve reliability for next-generation nuclear energy.

Stylianos Chatzidakis, assistant professor of nuclear engineering at Purdue University, was among the College of Engineering faculty recognized for outstanding dedication to teaching in an Aug. 24 advertisement in the Purdue Exponent. The recognition was based on results from the Center for Instructional Excellence’s teacher evaluation surveys.

Michael Streicher (BSNE ’12), president and chief operating officer of H3D Inc. in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been named one of Purdue Engineering’s 38 by 38 honorees, recognizing exceptional alumni who have demonstrated significant achievement, rapid professional growth and meaningful impact in their fields by age 38.

The Purdue Engineering 38 by 38 is inspired by the legacy of alumnus Neil Armstrong, who was 38 years old when he became the first person to set foot on the moon. The annual award honors 38 Purdue Engineering alumni who are 38 years old and younger and have demonstrated an accelerated trajectory of professional success and made a significantly high impact in their field, organization, community or society as measured in units relative to their work. Purdue Nuclear Engineering team named finalist in ANS Student Design Competition 💡

The American Nuclear Society recently selected a team from Purdue Nuclear Engineering as one of four finalists in the 2026 ANS Student Design Competition, marking the second consecutive year that a Nuclear Engineering team has earned finalist recognition. The team will present its work, “Design of MaRCS Code: Modeling and Reduction of Californium Sources,” at the society’s November meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The meeting’s theme is “Going Critical: Creating a Durable Nuclear Resurgence.”

Last Thursday, Purdue School of Nuclear Engineering and ANS co-hosted the annual NE Welcome Picnic at Happy Hollow park! ☀️
It was a fun gathering filled with great food, games, and wonderful company, both familiar faces and new friends. A huge thank-you to everyone who helped organize the event, as well as everyone who came out!
