Student Spotlight!

Haley Heitz - Senior BSN Student

Fun Fact- I have 5-year-old twin siblings!

Haley is from Shadyside, Ohio and graduated from Linsly High School. She chose nursing because she wanted a career where she could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and have the opportunity to care for others during their hardest moments. Haley is currently working as a nurse extern in the NICU at Wheeling Hospital, where she has been able to gain valuable experience and further develop her passion for caring for patients and their families. Outside of work and school, she enjoys spending time with friends and family. After graduation, she plans to begin her nursing career in either the NICU or pediatrics. She also hopes to continue her education and become a Nurse Practitioner in the future.

T'was the night before nursing classes, all through the halls
Everything was silent- you could hear a pin drop and fall.
Faculty were readying their materials to share
While students were getting ready and prepping with care.
A bundle of books and uniforms were sitting in a stack,
As the students turned to finish sorting their backpacks
Their pencils, how sharp. Their notebooks, how new.
Their folders ranged in colors from red to blue.
Their highlighters were all bright like a light that would glow
and their papers were all as white as snow.
The seniors were getting nestled all snug in their dorms,
While juniors had nightmares of classes starting to form.
The friends in other majors on the other side of the door
Where not as anxious about the classes in the morn.
With genuine smiles as they told their non-nursing friends no,
With a response "it is going to be awhile until out I go."
For if it were easy, everyone would do it
With the finishing line so close it's no time to quit
The stress of tomorrow held tight in their mind,
the peace and serenity of this journey they struggled to find.
With a smile on their faces and determination in their head
They tried their best to close their eyes for bed.
For some 16 weeks until they reach the finish line
For others they are just starting but they will be fine.
And all the nursing faculty want you to know
Is we are here with you, to help you learn and grow
You'll be impacting lives soon- So rest your eyes
And keep close to your heart- your reason for why.
You are all so smart and your potential so bright.

Shelby Harris - Senior BSN Student.

Fun fact - I rescued a dog named Bubs in high school. 🐶

Shelby is from Harpers Ferry, WV. She chose nursing at West Liberty because they allow student athletes in the program, allowing her to play for the WLU softball team. 🥎
Shelby also work as a PCT on the IMU floor and is an Extern in Medical Oncology.

☀ Serving the Community All Summer Long! ☀

While enjoying their summer break or taking a break from summer classes, our senior student nurses chose to give back to the community by volunteering at the Marshall County Fair First Aid Tent alongside the dedicated nursing team from WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital.

This experience allowed our students to step outside the classroom and continue developing their nursing skills through hands-on community service while providing care and support to fair-goers. Their commitment to service, learning, and compassionate care reflects the values of our nursing program and the future of the nursing profession.

We are incredibly proud of our students for spending part of their summer making a difference in the lives of others and representing our program so well. Thank you WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital for partnering with us to provide these valuable experiences!
