Looking for something interesting to read this weekend? Have a gander at a special volume of the peer reviewed journal _Global Black Thought_ (GBT) that was recently guest edited by Dr. Hettie Williams. The focus of this special edition is on Black women and the Brown vs. Board of Education decision. Your Monmouth login should gain you access to the whole journal: https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/56462 . In case you can't access it that way, the Introduction is available on Black Perspectives: https://www.aaihs.org/black-women-and-the-brown-decision/

Black American women such as Pauli Murray, Constance Baker Motley, Mamie Phipps Clark, and Ruby Gainer were the architects of the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Recent History MA graduate Emily Homer ('25) has just published the article "Medical Misogyny and Marketing Addiction: How the Nineteenth-Century Patent Medicine Industry Exploited Women" in Nursing Clio. Congratulations Emily!
https://nursingclio.org/2026/01/21/medical-misogyny-and-marketing-addiction-how-the-nineteenth-century-patent-medicine-industry-exploited-women/

About Nursing Clio: "Nursing Clio is an open access, peer-reviewed, collaborative blog project that ties historical scholarship to present-day issues related to gender and medicine. Bodies, reproductive rights, and health care are often at the center of social, cultural, and political debates. We believe the issues that dominate today’s headlines and affect our daily lives reach far back into the past — that the personal is historical."

Today, nearly half of young American women report negative interactions with healthcare providers. Research suggests that these experiences contribute to women pursuing alternative medicines at hig…

Another example of the dynamic nature of the Department and its members. Last week Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Ziobro had the opportunity to speak with Kenny Chesney as part of the Center's “Conversations with Our Curator” series. Chesney only had a little time with Professor Ziobro, but in that short time he learned really quickly why we all think she's the best (and why a trained historian is just that much different than other interviewers)!

"Melissa’s a history professor and someone who thinks in curatorial terms – it’s a very different way to approach all this. But her energy is so present, she really draws you into the conversation. She cares about these stories, but she cares for several kinds of reasons, making it an interesting process that made me really think about what I was saying in bigger ways."

Dr. Hettie Williams' _Digital History_ graduate class is wrapping up and as it does so we'd like to showcase a handful of the excellent projects her students created, starting with: "We Have Always Been Here: Historic Transgender Communities. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/1c4abcbeab984a55bb36c12e33022b31

The Story Map is just the beginning of an interactive look at the history of transgender communities in the United States.

On February 14th, 2025, the National Park Service removed all references to the words “transgender” and “q***r” in their webpage on the Stonewall National Monument, altering the LGBTQ+ acronym to “LGB.” The Stonewall uprising has long been considered the nexus of the modern q***r liberat...
