Advanced Cyber Analytics Course taught by USMA Faculty.

From 21 to 25 July, the USMA Operations Research Center and Department of Systems Engineering delivered the Cyber Data Analytics Course for Army Cyber Command at the Georgia Cyber Center.

COL David Beskow (USMA Operations Research Center Director) and Mr. Ian Kloo (Department of Systems Engineering Data Scientist and Assistant Professor) co-taught the week-long course to 30 military and civilian students at the Georgia Cyber Center in downtown Augusta.

The 30 students were from ARCYBER G36, ARCYBER G33, CPB, TIAD, Forensic Malware Analysis Team, and one student from the Fort Gordon MWR team.

The course focused on teaching the basics of Python Data Analytics with a focus on data science fundamentals and connecting data science workflows, Gabriel Nimbus, and LOKI. It also taught students fundamentals of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power BI.

This summer, 1LT Elijah Bellamy and CPT Nico Manzonelli teamed up at the Army Cyber Technology & Innovation Center (ArCTIC) to develop a software tool that helps authorizing officials better understand their organization’s security posture.

Both had the incredible opportunity to pursue graduate education—Eli is currently studying at Georgia Tech, and Nico earned a Master’s in Data Science from Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. They’re now putting those skills to work in support of Army cyber innovation.

We’re proud to see our grads making an impact in the cyber domain.

This summer, CDT Olivia Esquivel and CDT Madeline Edwards took their Systems Engineering skills overseas for an unforgettable internship in Paris, France with NATO’s Science and Technology Organization.

Guided by LTC Matt Mogensen-a former DSE faculty member now serving as an ORSA with NATO-the cadets explored how AI is shaping military capabilities across the alliance. From learning how the French Army is integrating AI into operations to visiting the U.S. Embassy’s Defense Attaché Office, it was a hands-on education in global defense cooperation.

Of course, there was also time to soak in some history and culture, including a powerful visit to Pointe du Hoc, a key D-Day site that brought the legacy of service and sacrifice into sharp focus.

Huge thanks to LTC Mogensen for his mentorship and the lasting impression he left on our cadets. Experiences like this remind us why international partnerships-and exceptional leaders-matter.

Congratulations to Lieutenant Colonel Sam Butler on taking command of the Ground Applications Program Office (GAPO)!

During his time with the Department of Systems Engineering, LTC Butler made a lasting impact—serving as a standout instructor, leading cutting-edge analysis in our Operations Research Center, and managing our Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) program.

Now he’s bringing that same excellence to the Army acquisition enterprise, where his leadership will shape the future of capability development.

Cadets Making Waves in the Indo-Pacific🌏🌴

Three cadets just wrapped up a high-impact AIAD with USARPAC’s Chief Data Office in Hawaii:

CDT Zac Mansfield (EM), CDT Tyler Gohlich (OR), and CDT Cecilia Ollis (EM) took on three critical tasks related to this year’s academic theme, “Projecting Lethality - Addressing the Multidimensional Challenges in the Indo-Pacific”:

1. Battlefield Reporting – Designed processes to improve operational data collection.

2. Data Analysis – Developed code to extract insights from publicly and commercially available information.

3. Data Literacy Training – Delivered a GenAI-focused workshop for DoD personnel to enhance mission readiness.

From stakeholder engagements to briefings with senior leaders, our cadets represented the Academy with professionalism, technical skill, and confidence.

Huge thanks to USARPAC for mentoring the next generation of Army leaders!

A Huge Thank You to J.P. Morgan.

We are extremely grateful to the entire JP Morgan team for their outstanding support, mentorship, and hospitality. Opportunities like this help develop the next generation of Army leaders by challenging them to think critically, operate in complex environments, and learn from some of the best in the industry.

Thank you for investing in our cadets and for helping them grow as both engineers and leaders!

Cadets Gaining Space Domain Experience

This summer, DSE cadets are engaged in space-focused internships through U.S. Space Command (SPACECOM) and United Launch Alliance (ULA), gaining firsthand exposure to how space operations support the warfighter and advance national security objectives.

Cadets Vo and Wingard are working directly with U.S. Space Command, applying systems engineering concepts to real-world challenges in the joint space domain. This opportunity was made possible through the efforts of MAJ Phil Schmedeman, a former DSE faculty member who spent the past two years working on SPACECOM projects through the Department of Systems Engineering. His leadership was instrumental in getting West Point added to SPACECOM’s Academic Engagement Enterprise, opening the door for increased cadet involvement.

Meanwhile, Cadets Nopper, Needy, and Scruggs are interning with United Launch Alliance and learning how ULA designs and launches rockets for NASA, the Department of Defense, and commercial clients.

Across both internships, cadets are applying classroom knowledge to cutting-edge problems and developing the technical and leadership skills needed to operate in one of the Army’s most dynamic and complex domains.
