Hart House Chess Club Welcome to the Hart House Chess Club, the official chess club of the University of Toronto. Established 1895.

The Hart House Chess Club is the official chess club of The University of Toronto. Founded 127 years ago, it is one of the University’s oldest, most successful and highest-profile clubs. The Hart House Chess Club offers a friendly, lively gathering place for chess players of all skill levels. We have returned back in-person from the COVID-19 pandemic, and meet in-person from 4pm-11pm at the Hart H

ouse Reading Room. For 2022-2023, we are planning for a full slate of events! Members are welcome to join our weekly lessons, special lectures, and social events for no cost. Eligible student members will also have the opportunity to qualify to represent the University of Toronto at The Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships held each year at the end of December. We also compete every year at the Canadian University Chess Championship. Look at our Upcoming Events section on our website and get excited about one of our best Hart House Chess years yet!

The Hart House Chess Club hosted the 2026 Canadian University Chess Championships this past weekend! It was the biggest CUCC in the event's history, with over 60 teams participating and 22 schools represented.

University of Toronto A defended its title from last year with a perfect match score, and University of Toronto C followed just behind them in 2nd place.

In the Reserve section, University of Toronto D put up a strong showing also with a perfect match score.
