Otterbein University Art & Art History Department Welcome to the Otterbein University Art & Art History Department page. At Otterbein, art and art history students create in a strong liberal arts environment.

Ideas encountered in Integrative Studies (Otterbein's core liberal arts curriculum) and elective courses inform students' studio and art history experiences. Critical thinking and clear communication are emphasized in the creative process. The Department of Art & Art History also emphasizes professional development. In addition to trips to large regional art museums, students regularly explore art opportunities in Columbus through frequent visits to museums, galleries, and artists' studios as a part of classes. From the freshman year onward, visiting art professionals provide students with opportunities to learn about art careers. An annual juried student art exhibition is open to all art students. Art major seminars provide three semesters of professional preparation including a senior year exhibition. These classes assist students in career development processes such as résumé writing, portfolio preparation, interviewing, graduate school research, and exhibition planning.

Today! Join us on Thursday, October 8th, 2026 from 4p - 7p for The Living Art of Generative Scribing, Olaf Baldini at the Fisher Gallery, 27 S. Grove St., Westerville, OH.

October 5, 2026 - April 15, 2027

Public Reception: Thursday, October 8, 2026, 4p – 7p

This exhibition showcases Generative Scribing, an emergent social artform, featuring the work of Berlin-based artist Olaf Baldini. Cultivated within the Presencing Institute and the Awareness-Based Systems Change movement at MIT‘s Sloan School of Management, Generative Scribing pairs deep, active listening with fluid visual art to help organizes and communities navigate complex, evolving futures. The installation features large-format paintings and drawings from global initiatives—including the GAIA Journey (COVID 2020-21) and Ubuntu Lab (2019-2026)—alongside new work drawn from dialogues and social fields at Otterbein and Central Ohio.

Don‘t miss Baldini working live at the public reception. Baldini will be joined by Arawana Hayashi, co-founder of Social Presencing Theater (SPT) and a group of Otterbein students.

Reminder! Join us Thursday, October 1, 2026 for the Celebrating 250 Years A Journey Through America with Robert Freimark public reception at The Frank Museum of Art, 39 S. Vine St., Westerville from 4p - 6p. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. Residential street parking or free public parking is available on State St., 1 block away from the Frank Museum.

Between 1960 and 1968, artist Robert Freimark created Fifty States, a suite of abstract, full-sheet color screen prints representing each of the fifty United States. The series was selected as the official US Bicentennial presentation at the 1976 opening of the Amerika Haus in Munich and has since been exhibited internationally.
To make this collection, Freimark traveled around the country. He drew from his own experiences as well as extensive research into the history of each state to create a unique, multilayered print. Situated in The Frank, a museum dedicated to global art, the installation reflects on America's 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and our place in the world.

Today! 4p - 6p Public Reception!

Join us for the Weight and Witness Art Exhibition Public Reception on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 4p - 6pm at the Fisher Gallery (Roush Hall)! Artists Alex Lewis '21 and Jack Koppert '21 will speak beginning at 4:30 pm.

Weight & Witness pairs the accumulated gravity of Alex Lewis' ceramic and assemblage sculptures with the unflinching portraiture
of Jack Koppert's oil paintings. Together, their work engenders a domestic solemnity, punctuated by moments of surprise and humor. The artists’ approach to conventional art topics, like visual self-describing and the incorporation of found objects, is compellingly fresh. Koppert uses repetition, instancing, and sight lines to existentially universalize portraiture. “The naked man is representative of a self, a seeing self, conscious and aware. We are all the naked one, trying and scratching to communicate.’ Koppert states. Lewis brings new life to the “Readymade” trope through his critique of ‘fast furniture’ made at the turn of the millennium. The artist’s integration of abstract but legible ceramic forms with carefully selected found objects brings confounding delightful, with a nod toward sweetness and nostalgia.
