It happens often that I have clients who are not prepared to ride during a saddle fitting appointment. Some of them have never ridden for a saddle fitter before, despite multiple appointments, and some just don't know that is standard practice.

We do our best to ensure you are aware of the procedure for an appointment. Everything you need to know is in our confirmation email when you book your appointment time.

Happy Monday Everyone! We wanted to clear up some confusion from some of our beloved clients.

Arvelle Equestrian, LLC is owned by Mid Atlantic. We set up a new business and website so that we could have a dedicated person run the business of the saddle rack and any other products that we offer someday, without confusing people about Mid Atlantic Saddlery and our services.

Thank you all for wanting to protect us. I am so grateful that we have so many people looking out for us. All of the saddle fitters and saddleries that are sharing the Arvelle page and posts are encouraged to do so, because we want them to help us sell the product, help their customers, and make some money on those sales.

We created this product because there was a need for it.

We set up the business in such a way that it could create jobs.

Our aim is always to help independent saddle fitters and those looking out for our horses make more money to stay in buisness.

Times are tough and we want as many people to stay in the field as we can.

**This weekend has been truly beautiful **

I was invited to Calvert County Maryland to give a talk to the OPRC (Old People’s Riding Club) and to do a clinic of saddle fitting the following day.

The organizer saw me give a 1 hour talk at the Southern Maryland Department of Ag’s horse education day and decided she had to bribe me into coming south for her and her friends.

“Come and stay in my cabin on the water” will get a Maryland Girl every time! A beautiful quiet cabin, a direct path to a beach full of sharks teeth, and a view! Wow what a view! (I am still a complete beginner at spotting the sharks teeth but Dianne found me 6 to bring home while we walked and talked on her beach)

It is truly a joy to do what I do. We helped a bunch of horses and riders find comfort and confidence and improved fit. Even a few with some newly diagnosed medical issues which have zapped their confidence. And educated a crowd on saddle construction, saddle maintenance, and how saddles should be fitted. What a truly lovely weekend!

Sizing is based on the range of the tree, not on a "Dot to Dot" measurement. The shape of the tree of the saddle is a factor. And most manufacturers have exclusive trees that only they use and can access.

This is only one of the reasons why when you say, "what do I need to look for used?" We cant give you an exact saddle or measurement to look for. If the tree used in that particular saddle isn't disclosed in the serial number, then there is no way of knowing what it should measure, has it is been pressed, did the tree get replaced for a new size tree or have other repairs done to it. Etc.

We know every detail of the components of the saddles we carry and represent. If a brand doesn’t provide us with transparency and knowledge, I won’t sell or recommend their saddles.

Give us a shout if you want to find the best combination of components and features to make you and your horses happy and comfortable!

Which one is the hoop tree? Which one is Medium Wide? Which one is an A frame tree? Which one is for Baroque breeds? Spoiler: No one will get all of these right because THERE IS NO CONSISTENCY ACROSS BRANDS when it comes to tree shapes. You cannot JUST look at a gullet width or headplate shape and know what kind of horse it will fit- which is why “dot to dot” measurements are irrelevant and tree point width is just ONE part of fitting a saddle. Also, what one brand calls a “Thoroughbred” tree might be the same shape as another brand’s “Wide” tree. We know not all Thoroughbreds are shaped the same and we certainly know they aren’t all wide. There are no black and white answers in saddle fitting or buying. Saying things in terms of “always” or “never” when it comes to saddle trees (and most things in life) won’t increase your credibility, but will certainly increase your chances of being wrong. So choose a fitter that YOU trust to know what is inside the saddle and what will fit your horse’s anatomy and WHY- across brands. I always say that there is not one single brand or tree that fits every horse- and the photo below is a great example of WHY I say that. Put another way, you go to an Optician to pick out glasses that you like and that look good on your face, and you go to an Optometrist/Ophthalmologist to find out your prescription and vision correction needs in order to shop for those glasses. Your trained and experienced saddlefitter is the Optometrist/Ophthalmologist because they know what the inside of your eyeballs NEED and why. The used tack seller/single brand rep is the Optician- perfectly fine to buy from when you already have your prescription but you don’t start there! Get what fits and learn WHY- ignore labels! Even if your Morgan cross is in a Baroque tree and your Thoroughbred in a Hoop- don’t crash out! Just because your horse may not match the name- doesn’t mean it won’t do them any good.
