Congratulations to Professor Aisha Saad of Georgetown University Law Center, recipient of the 2026–2027 Haub Environmental Law Distinguished Junior Scholar Award!

Presented annually by the Elisabeth Haub School of Law - Pace University, the award recognizes an emerging environmental law professor who demonstrates scholarly excellence and promise early in their career. Professor Saad’s scholarship examines the intersection of environmental law and corporate governance, exploring the relationship between law, business, and environmental and social challenges.

Professor Saad delivered the keynote address at Haub Law’s Future Environmental Law Professors Workshop, bringing together current and aspiring environmental law academics. The workshop featured mock interviews, presentations of works in progress, and faculty feedback to support participants preparing to enter the legal academic job market.

Join the Pace I Haub Environmental Law Program for the 2026 Lloyd K. Garrison Lecture on Environmental Law, featuring Haub Visiting Scholar Professor Jim Salzman. In “Liquid Asset: Meeting the Challenge of Safe Drinking Water in a Changing World,” Professor Salzman will address one of the central challenges facing environmental law and policy: access to safe drinking water.

Professor Salzman is the Donald Bren Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law, with joint appointments at University of California, Los Angeles - School of Law and Bren School of Environmental Science & Management - University of California, Santa Barbara. His scholarship spans drinking water, environmental policy design, and markets for ecosystem services.

An annual highlight of our academic year, the Garrison Lecture honors the legal advocacy that helped protect Storm King Mountain and shaped the development of environmental law.

Pace l Haub Environmental Law Program Professor Steve Solow offers insight into the legal scrutiny facing the EPA’s rollback of power plant emissions standards in Bloomberg Law’s “Trump’s Power Plant Air Rule Revives Old Carbon Capture Dispute.”

As litigation renews debate over the feasibility and cost of carbon capture technology, Professor Solow highlights a significant consequence of the end of Chevron deference: the administration must persuade courts that its interpretation of the law is the best reading.

“Instead, the administration will have to convince a judge that the administration’s view is the best reading of what the law requires, and not just a permissible one,” Professor Solow explains.

The The Jeffrey G. Miller National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition (NELMCC) is seeking volunteer judges for the 2027 competition, February 17–20, 2027, at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in White Plains, New York.

NELMCC brings together law students from across the country to test their appellate advocacy skills while tackling complex and timely environmental law issues. We invite members of the legal community to join us on the bench and help shape the next generation of advocates.

Quick facts for prospective judges:
- You do not need to specialize in environmental law to participate.
- New York State attorneys are eligible to earn 2 CLE skills/practice credits for each round judged, up to 6 credits total.

The Pace l Haub Environmental Law Program congratulates Alfred Lahai Gbabai Brownell Sr. and Durwood Zaelke on their selection as the 2026 recipients of the Elisabeth Haub Award for Environmental Law and Diplomacy.

The award recognizes their distinguished contributions to the development of environmental law and their sustained leadership in advancing environmental justice, climate action, and environmental governance worldwide. Their work demonstrates the importance of legal innovation and international cooperation in addressing complex environmental challenges.

The laureates will be jointly honored on October 21, 2026, at Pace University in New York City, with the ceremony also broadcast virtually.

On Monday, October 5, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Suncor Energy Inc. v. County Commissioners of Boulder County, a case concerning whether state common law claims seeking damages from fossil fuel companies for climate harms can proceed.

Ahead of the arguments, Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University Professor Katrina Kuh examines the case in a new post on GreenLaw, the blog of the Pace Environmental Law Review.

Professor Kuh emphasizes the distinction between addressing alleged corporate deception about climate harms and regulating greenhouse gas emissions. She also argues that the petitioners’ proposed constitutional and preemption doctrines could significantly limit states’ authority to protect their residents, with consequences extending well beyond climate litigation.

How can environmental law educators help students connect their learning to practice—and find hope amid challenging environmental news?

In a new article for the Center for Progressive Reform, Professor Achinthi Vithanage, Executive Director of the Environmental Law Program at Haub Law, reflects on the inspiration she found in Teaching Environmental Law in Context, a book by Professors Rebecca Bratspies and Carmen G. Gonzalez. Both authors have shared their expertise with the Haub Law community: Professor Bratspies as a Haub Visiting Scholar and Professor Gonzalez as a keynote speaker for the Blaine Sloan Lecture on International Law.

Drawing on her work in the classroom, externship programs, and student advising, Professor Vithanage explores how real-world case studies can connect local environmental challenges to international human rights and broaden students’ understanding of environmental advocacy.

She also considers bringing “radical positivism” into her teaching: helping students see how environmental law victories can inspire new approaches to solving environmental problems.

To mark the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University’s 50th anniversary, Haub Law is launching the Haub Environmental Law Fifty Fund to support the next generation of environmental law scholars.

The fund will provide flexible grants for junior scholars pursuing innovative research and collaborative projects. Funding may support work such as field research, data acquisition, workshops, practitioner engagement, and community collaboration.

“Environmental law scholarship is strongest when scholars have the freedom and resources to explore new ideas, build collaborations, and connect their work to the communities and institutions confronting environmental challenges,” said Professor Josh Galperin, Associate Dean of the Pace l Haub Environmental Law Program.

Eligible applicants include full-time, pre-tenure faculty and faculty in their first year post-tenure at U.S. law schools whose work focuses on environmental law. Eligible clinical faculty may also apply, and collaborative proposals are encouraged.

Applications are due November 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
