With all of the discussions about changes to FIRST LEGO League (FLL), the WV Robotics Alliance just wanted to let our FLL community know that we will not be running “Future Edition”. Our state championship (Founders Edition) will be held this December 5 at Fairmont State University, and all West Virginia FLL teams are invited.

FIRST LEGO League team LEGO League Ladies from the Berkeley County 4-H STEM Club attended the FIRST World Championship last week in Houston, and brought home some well-deserved hardware! These outstanding students won the Coopertition Award!

The FLL (FIRST LEGO League) Coopertition Award celebrates a team that displays extraordinary enthusiasm, spirit, and teamwork, accomplishing more together than they could alone. It recognizes teams that demonstrate respect and helpfulness toward others, even while competing fiercely on the field, embodying the concept of cooperation– cooperation and competition together.

Congratulations LEGO League Ladies, you represented West Virginia proudly! 💙💛💙💛

At WV VEX States, one of the WVU News team, Lilly Reisenweber, interviewed some of our students and myself about the impact robotics is having on their lives. The story aired on WV Public Broadcasting, but the archive is below, starting at 19:20. I hope you enjoy it!

Fairmont State's Day of Giving is tomorrow (3/26) and the WV Robotics Alliance needs your help to keep our program sustainable and growing.

Conservatively, our team impacts several thousand students a year at qualifiers, state and regional championships, workshops and camps, and through a range of support mechanisms. On an almost weekly basis, we rent trucks and pay for travel to haul our trailer full of tournament equipment across the state to empower schools such as Eastwood Elementary and St. Joes to host an IQ, V5, and ADC qualifiers.

Annually, we purchase new game elements, replace broken fields, update our field controls, and ensure our cameras and live-streaming equipment are running optimally ($10,000). We run summer camps which requires summer staffing, travel, and robotics kits ($30,000). When we have the resources, we sponsor new teams ($1,000 - $2,500), and waive event registrations.

Providing volunteer shirts, meals, and often travel for Key Volunteer roles (Head Ref, Judge Advisor, etc.) for qualifiers and state championships is costly ($10,000+). We are grateful for our many sponsors including A3L Federal Works, Aurora Flight Sciences, WV Department of Education, NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, NASA's Robotics Alliance Project, and others.

Please consider a gift to keep us on the road at schools and college campuses, hosting the highest quality events, trainings, and camps possible to inspire the next generation of WV scientists, programmers, engineers, and mathematicians.

Join me and make a gift to Fairmont State for Day of Giving

Robotics Summer Camps – REGISTRATION OPENS FEBRUARY 18

Our hands-on robotics camps are 5-day programs focusing on fundamental building and programming skills, games, and fun challenges. Each camp will provide information on age appropriate competitions and how to get involved and stay engaged in robotics. Camps are staffed by Fairmont State ERC staff and college interns sponsored by the WV Space Grant Consortium, and hosted at Fairmont State University.

This year we are offering a single full-day camp for students ages 9-12. Students will build, program, and drive VEX IQ robots in a series of fun challenges, as well as additional activities with aerial drones, 3D printing, and more.

Camps will be held the weeks of June 22-26 and July 20-24 at Fairmont State University.
