US-Japan Bridging Foundation University of Wisconsin-Whitewater UW-Whitewater College of Letters and Sciences World Languages and Cultures - UWW Sophia University Wisconsin Association of Teachers of Japanese

Please join us in congratulating Japanese Studies majors, Bekah Jansen (left) and Tyler Winner (right), on being selected as 2026-2027 US-Japan Bridging Scholars! Both students have completed the Japanese language sequence at UW-Whitewater and will be studying abroad at Sophia University (上智大学) in Tokyo, Japan. Bekah-san received a $4,500 scholarship to study for the full academic year and Tyler-san received a $2,500 scholarship to study for the fall semester. 大変おめでとうございます！A huge thank you goes out to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation for their incredibly generous support of Japanese language learners in the US. 誠に有難うございました！The UW-Whitewater Japanese Studies Program is extremely proud to send two US-Japan Bridging Scholars to Japan for the 2026-2027 academic year! 日本語の勉強を頑張ってください！

Please join us in welcoming 2026-2027 ALLEX Teaching Fellow, Sachiko Asanuma Sensei, to UW-Whitewater! Asanuma Sensei earned her BA in Japanese Literature from the University of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo and has worked as a Japanese Language Teaching Assistant at Sabah College in Malaysia. We are so happy to have her with us this year! A special thank you goes out to the Japanese language students for their Warhawk hospitality in welcoming Asanuma Sensei to campus!

Warhawks spent their summer in Japan! UWW Japanese language students spent their summer in Japan doing internships, studying abroad, and traveling. Aisha Butler did a summer internship at Tea Ceremony Camellia, Jacob Jennissen did a summer internship at Katano High School, Nolan Worrell was selected to participate in Kansai Gaidai's Manga Art Institute summer program, and Nelson Klein set out to explore Japan for the first time!

Dr. Michelle Damian, Japanese Studies Program Coordinator, kicked off the end-of-year celebration for the Japanese Studies Program by thanking members of the Japanese Studies Advisory Council, ALLEX Teaching Fellow Miina Marutani, and announcing a very long list of student achievements. We could not be prouder of the Japanese language students for their hard work, kind heart, and warhawk spirit! A special thank you goes to Dr. Larry Neuman, Professor Emeritus, for his kind sponsorship of this celebration and all he does to support the Japanese Studies Program at UWW. 誠に有難うございました！

Warhawks make their dreams come true! Last semester, Andrew Kranzusch gave a Japanese presentation on world-renowned marimbist Keiko Abe (安倍圭子先生）during his Japanese 202 class. This semester, while studying abroad at Kansai Gaidai University, he traveled to Fukui Prefecture to watch his musical inspiration perform live. Abe Sensei graciously made time to chat with Andrew leaving him a bit starstruck. He said it was one of the greatest experiences of his life. 夢が叶って本当に良かったですね。安倍先生、アンドリューさんと親身にお話いただき、心より感謝申し上げます。🩷

Japanese Studies Program Coordinator, Dr. Michelle Damian, congratulates Daniela Melero on being awarded the "Japanese Studies Major Scholarship" for academic excellence. This generous scholarship is made possible through the kind support of Dr. Lawrence Neuman, Professor Emeritus. Daniela is a Japanese Studies and Accounting double major who has studied abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan, received the Avant STAMP 4s seal of biliteracy for functional fluency in Japanese, and works as a Japanese language tutor at the Success Center. 大変おめでとうございます！

ALLEX Teaching Fellow, Miina Marutani Sensei, hosted a yukata event for students. In this video she is dressing first-year Japanese language student Elise Staff. Miina Sensei worked very hard to meet the high demand of the event. Many students loved wearing yukata! 先生、どうも有難うございました！大変お疲れ様でした！
