Our group of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students and faculty made the most of their last days in the park and at the K Bar Z Guest Ranch & Outfitters. They learned about bison, mountains, hot springs, bears, geysers, and attended a rodeo! They’re home safe and sound now, taking some time to rest and reflect before classes start in a short few weeks. Big thank you to Dawna and her staff at the K-Z for taking good care, as always, of our precious cargo. Until next time!

The last several days have been fun-filled and busy for our group. Lecture topics included lake sediment, volcanic history, and the impact of the 1988 fires. They were treated to a talk about bears from UWW alum Tyler Brasington, followed by a visit to a bear dean where the entire group climbed in! Ryan Pisani, another UWW alum also visited the group and reflected on his time on the trip in the early 200s. The group also played volleyball, went whitewater rafting, and enjoyed the annual K Bar Z Guest Ranch & Outfitters BBQ with music and dancing! They’ll start the long trip home later this week.

Our group of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students and faculty have been busy during their first few days in Yellowstone National Park and K Bar Z Guest Ranch & Outfitters. They had a much needed free day, followed by lectures in the field. One of the lectures was presented by Rick McIntyre, a well-renowned wolf expert and story teller and another about the wildfire activity in Yellowstone and the 1988 fires. The K Bar Z is taking good care of our group during these busy days!

On their last days at Grand Teton, our group was treated to a talk from Jamie Langbein with the National Park Service on monitoring birds and canines in the Park. Students got to be biologists on the field, watching and monitoring osprey in their nest. Dr. Puleo gave a lecture on the geologic history and formation of the Tetons and Dr. Frye talked about the history of the Park. They then left the Teton Science Schools, for Yellowstone National Park and arrived at their destination for the next two weeks, the K Bar Z Guest Ranch & Outfitters.

Our group spent the day in Devils Tower hiking around the base and learning about the formation and history of the tower. After a night’s stop in Casper, WY and a visit to Garden Creek Falls. They’ll be at the Teton Science Schools for the next couple of days, exploring Grand Teton National Park. Expect more amazing photos to come!

On their way out west, our National Parks group stopped at the Dignity of Earth and Sky statue in Chamberlain, SD, discussing the reason for this beautiful statue and some real history of the Native Peoples in the region. They then visited their first national park, the Badlands, learning about indigenous people, geology, and climate change in the park. They’ll continue west over the next couple of days, ultimately ending up at Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Stay tuned!

Professors John Frye and Pete Puleo from the Department of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science, UW-Whitewater hit the road with a group of students, headed out west. Students will learn about advanced environmental science in the national parks over the course of three weeks. Follow along here for a peek into their adventures.
