Last week at the WSU Tech Board meeting, we had the privilege of recognizing Ethan Sweberg, an EMT student at WSU Tech's FutureReady Healthcare Center and a senior at Wichita Northwest High School, for his incredible, lifesaving efforts. Ethan was presented with a Sedgwick County EMS Challenge Coin and a Citizen Hero Certificate for his heroic actions during a cardiac arrest emergency on October 28th.

That evening, Ethan arrived at a choir concert and was met at the door with an urgent request for help. He quickly retrieved his medical bag and found an older gentleman in distress—pale, blue, and unresponsive. Ethan immediately instructed bystanders to call 911 and grab an AED while he began chest compressions. While EMS was en route, Ethan and those assisting performed CPR and used the AED, ultimately reviving the patient. By the time EMS arrived, the gentleman had regained a pulse and was breathing on his own.

The recognition was made even more special with the presence of Chief Kevin Lanterman, Deputy Chief Angela Hamilton, Col. Shannon Reed, and members EMS crew who responded to the call. Together, they honored Ethan with heartfelt gratitude for his quick thinking and skillful response.

WSU Tech President Dr. Sheree Utash also presented Ethan with a WSU Tech challenge symbolizing the college's immense pride in his bravery, quick thinking, and commitment to saving lives and Heather Krull from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, the lead sponsor for the FutureReady Center, was there to congratulate Ethan and his family.

Ethan, your dedication to making a difference inspires us all, and we’re so proud to have you as part of the WSU Tech family. 💙
