It really is all about connections in the WSU T2T program!

Connections with cohort members. Connections with T2T mentors, advisors and instructors. And, most importantly, connections with the students sitting in each T2T teacher’s classroom every day.

John is definitely living up to the T2T motto! His commitment to building meaningful relationships with his students and creating a classroom where students feel seen, valued, and supported is evident and something to be proud of. These connections are at the heart of what makes a great teacher—and they are the kind of impact that can reach far beyond the classroom.

One of the best parts of WSU’s Transition to Teaching program is the people you meet along the way.

More than 300 students from across Kansas gathered at Sterling College for its 42nd Annual Theatre Workshop Day, and we had THREE WSU Transition to Teaching teachers there. Of course, they had to stop for a picture together!

That is one of the things we value so much about the face-to-face components of Wichita State University's T2T program. Our teachers do not just get to know their WSU instructors and mentors. They get to know each other.

They share ideas. They compare experiences. They ask questions. They celebrate wins. They help each other through the hard days. And over time, those relationships become a professional network of colleagues they can continue to lean on long after class ends.

Seeing three of our T2T teachers together at an event like this is a great example of what that community can look like in the real world. They may teach in different schools and communities, but they are part of the same network. 💛🖤

Kids today…

My husband passed away two weeks ago. Yesterday was my first day back in the classroom.

And this is how a room full of future teachers—most just 18–20 years old—showed their professor, someone they met less than two months ago, that they cared.

I couldn’t pass up this teachable moment. We talked about professionalism, ways to acknowledge tragedy in schools, and they let me tell some fun stories about my husband.

Kids today…I think we’re going to be alright. 🥹

Know someone who has a bachelor’s degree and would make an incredible teacher?

At Wichita State University, our Transition to Teaching (T2T) program helps qualified career changers turn their existing degree into a rewarding teaching career in Kansas!

Participants can teach in a classroom while completing the program, backed by cohort support, dedicated mentoring, and personalized guidance every step of the way.

Whether their background is in Science, Math, English, History, Art, Music, or another qualifying field, they may already qualify to make a lasting difference in local schools.

From Transition to Teaching candidate to experienced educator, and now back at Wichita State University sharing his perspective with Wichita State University College of Education educators and faculty!

Brian Anderson completed WSU’s Transition to Teaching program in 2014 and now teaches science at Wichita Public Schools Coleman Environmental Magnet Middle School. Recently, Brian was invited back to WSU to participate in a Corbin Connect alumni panel focused on current trends in today’s classrooms and how WSU programs prepare educators to successfully serve students.

For Brian, T2T provided a pathway into education at exactly the right time. “There are a lot of people in my own shoes who have thought about being educators, but it wasn't the right time. Later on, the idea comes back to them, but maybe they have a family or financial responsibilities so they can't just go back to traditional college. T2T was a great fit for that.”

And after more than a decade in education, Brian shared an important reminder about the impact teachers make: “There's a delayed gratification piece that you have to remember. You don't always see the results until 8–10 years or more down the line.”

That is what Transition to Teaching is all about, helping professionals turn the idea of becoming a teacher into a career that can impact students for years to come.

We are proud to call Brian a WSU T2T alumnus and grateful that he continues to give back to the next generation of educators! 💛🖤

Two WSU Transition to Teaching students. Two Horizon Award nominations!

We are incredibly excited to celebrate John Ramey of Circle Public Schools and Jacob Coonce of Derby Public Schools, who have both been selected as their districts’ Kansas Horizon Award nominees!

The Kansas Horizon Award recognizes outstanding educators for excellence during their first year of teaching, and we couldn’t be more proud to see two members of the Wichita State University T2T program receiving this recognition.

John and Jacob represent exactly what makes Transition to Teaching so special: talented professionals bringing their experiences, strengths, and passion into Kansas classrooms and making an impact from the very beginning.
