September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, and Sept. 17 marks the ninth annual National Physician Su***de Awareness Day. The day is dedicated to honoring the memory of colleagues who have died by su***de and to continue to raise awareness and discussion on how to prevent it. It also serves as a reminder that su***de can affect us, our friends and our colleagues.

This year, CORD - Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine, which initiated NPSA Day in 2018, is inviting people to join "The Moments That Matter" campaign. You can share how you maintain your mental health through art, poetry, exercise or other creative outlets. Your participation fosters open conversations and offers support to those who may be struggling. Share stories, photos, videos, artwork, messages of gratitude or wellness activities to help inspire others and promote physician well-being. You can submit your creative work by Sept. 14.

The 2026 Women Who Lead were recently announced by the Wichita Business Journal, and honorees include Cari Ahlers-Schmidt, Ph.D., research professor in our Department of Pediatrics and director of CRIBS; Dawn Fountain, residency program coordinator in our Department of Surgery; and Lindsay Strader, D.O., resident alumna and volunteer clinical assistant professor in our Department of Surgery.

Fun fact: KU School of Medicine-Wichita is one of only 16 medical schools in the country offering Klingenstein Fellowships for medical students. The fellowships are just one of the ways we're addressing the shortage of trained specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry. In Kansas, 60% of the state’s children and adolescents have unmet mental health needs because of that shortage, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

“We are already seeing the program strengthen the workforce dedicated to children’s mental health,” said Cassie Karlsson, M.D., associate professor in our Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and director of the KU School of Medicine-Wichita Klingenstein Fellowship program for medical students.

We're thankful for the Wichita Medical Research and Education Foundation and its continued impact on our great state, where we share a goal of improving the health of Kansans. Samuel Ofei-Dodoo, Ph.D., MPA, M.A., CPH, assistant dean of undergraduate medical education and population health associate professor; Laura Tatpati, M.D., dean of KU School of Medicine-Wichita; and Brad Rukes, KU Endowment senior development director-Wichita, attended the WMREF open house this week and joined the community in celebrating the foundation's achievements.

"We deeply appreciate WMREF's enduring partnership and its significant contributions to advancing the health of our community through support of medical education and research," Tatpati said. "WMREF has achieved a great deal over the past year, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of its work in the year ahead."

Ofei-Dodoo said he sincerely appreciates WMREF’s generous support of the Kansas Journal of Medicine, noting the foundation's "commitment to advancing medical scholarship and supporting the dissemination of high-quality research is invaluable."

Did you know research mentorships are available to local high school students as well as undergraduates who aren't in KU programs? Each year, about 200 participants take advantage of the University of Kansas Medical Center Educational Experience, a cross-campus program.

Meet some of the participants and their mentors from KU School of Medicine-Wichita, including Zinnia Singh, a Wichita High School East graduate interested in health disparities and healthcare access. She matched with Michelle Redmond, Ph.D., M.S., associate professor in our Department of Population Health who has extensively studied maternal and infant health and underserved populations.

We're excited to see our students making a difference across the state! Sophia is among 67 third-year medical students who have entered the clinical phase of their medical education. For some students, the experience includes spending time in rural Kansas communities, where they gain hands-on training and make a meaningful impact on patient care.

Help us give our newest medical student a warm Wilson welcome!

Meet Sophia Mazzetti, a third-year medical student from the KU School of Medicine–Wichita who is spending the next several weeks learning alongside our providers here at Wilson Medical Center and Neodesha Family Medicine.

Sophia earned her undergraduate degree in Molecular Bioscience and a Master's Degree in Public Health from KU. During medical school, she's dedicated her time to educational outreach for high school students interested in medicine and caring for patients through KU's free JayDoc Clinic.

Now, she's experiencing the heart of rural healthcare right here in Wilson County.

Working alongside Dr. Miranda McKellar, Dr. Brad Barrett, and other clinic staff, Sophia is gaining firsthand experience in the relationships, teamwork, and hands-on learning that make rural medicine so rewarding. She is excited to learn from the compassionate professionals who have made Wilson Medical Center a trusted resource for families across Southeast Kansas.
