Throwback Thursday: Who remembers this fun event? In 2000, the community joined KU School of Medicine-Wichita in celebrating the 25th anniversary of its first graduating class. (The first class of 14 medical students graduated from KU School of Medicine-Wichita in 1975.)

Paul Teran, M.D., associate professor in our Department of Pediatrics, will be honored by The University of Kansas this evening during a University Teaching Awards ceremony. Dr. Teran, who is among 15 KU faculty members receiving KU's annual teaching awards, is a recipient of the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award.

Dr. Teran serves as director of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at KU School of Medicine-Wichita. Known for his ability to connect with learners while fostering autonomy, curiosity and compassion, Dr. Teran has transformed educational experiences for medical students, residents, faculty and community partners alike. He pioneered patient- and family-centered rounds within pediatric hospital medicine, creating meaningful opportunities for learners to engage directly with patients and families while enhancing the quality of care.

Colleagues and trainees consistently praise his dedication to teaching, mentorship and professional development. As one resident wrote, “Dr. Teran is the best attending I have ever had. He makes learning enjoyable and is always available to help us succeed.” Through his exceptional commitment to medical education, patient-centered care and advocacy, Dr. Teran continues to shape the next generation of physicians and healthcare leaders.

“Teaching is central to KU’s mission,” said Douglas A. Girod, KU chancellor. “This year’s honorees exemplify what great teaching looks like. They inspire our students and prepare them to succeed and lead beyond KU.”

👀 Spotted in the news: Savannah Bender, M.D., one of our alumni, has joined the team at Clara Barton Medical Center. After residency in Colorado, she was drawn to the opportunity to return to a close-knit, rural community where she can care for patients of all ages.

The future opening of Heartspring's center for pediatric neurodevelopment near the Wichita Biomedical Campus will allow Heartspring, KU School of Medicine-Wichita and Wichita State University to collaborate extensively in the care of young patients from around the region on an outpatient basis.

“Our hope is to expand the outpatient services that are offered and also create new programs and clinics that don’t currently exist,” said Cassie Karlsson, M.D., psychiatrist and associate professor in KU School of Medicine-Wichita Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. “This is an opportunity to provide a much higher quality of care that’s coordinated amongst multiple specialists.”
