Home of the Emory Lindquist Honors Scholar program. Not more work, more meaningful work.

The Cohen Honors College aims to support all highly motivated students at Wichita State University by offering challenging interdisciplinary and department courses for Honors students and offering funding for undergraduate research and general education credit for service learning to all WSU students. Cohen Honors College students gain the habits of creative thinking, problem solving and lifelong learning through coursework, participation in community service and college governance. They benefit from closer contact with faculty (the average student-to-faculty ratio in Honors courses is 8:1), access to scholarships for experience-based learning such as study abroad, and opportunities for individual and collaborative original research to prepare for graduate, professional school, or the demands of today’s global workforce.

Over 300 first-year Cohen Honors students, their guests, and faculty participated in Honors Induction on Saturday, October 3 in Wiedemann Hall. This cherished tradition, which takes place during Wichita State University’s Family Weekend, formally welcomes students into our academic community.

We were joined by Dorothy (Cohen) Watson and Tom Watson and distinguished alumna Jenny Nguyen. Jenny graduated as an Emory Lindquist Honors Scholar with a Bachelor of Business Administration – Economics. Her Honors experiences and passion for community have led her to the role of Director of Executive Operations at Flag Star Football. Jenny also holds a certificate in Servant Leadership from Cornell University and MA in International Development Studies from The George Washington University.

Following the event, all were invited to an open House at the Cohen Honors College in Shocker Hall where students signed this year’s Induction book, Stephen Fry’s new edition of the epic tale The Odyssey.

Have a great idea but aren’t quite sure how to make it happen? Join us for The Planning Playbook: Projects, Events, and Ex*****on, an Honors professional development workshop designed to help you turn ideas into action, on Wednesday, October 28 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Second Floor of the Ablah Library.

Learn practical strategies for backward planning, project management, and event coordination, including how to identify priorities, establish milestones and deadlines, divide team responsibilities, and determine the resources you need to successfully move a project from idea to ex*****on.

These are skills you can put to work right away in student organizations, class projects, campus events, internships, and future professional roles.

📍 The wait is over... BILL'S Trip 2027 is headed to Zion National Park! 🎉
Applications are officially OPEN. Named in honor of Bill Cohen, BILL’S Trip invites honors students to explore the National Parks through the lenses of leadership, stewardship, and service. This immersive, multidisciplinary experience examines topics including servant leadership, Indigenous perspectives, outdoor wellness, environmental stewardship, and the complexities of the National Park Service.

WSU’s First Year Research Experience (FYRE) program is open to ALL first-year students at Wichita State University. Students need not be members of the Honors College but should have a strong interest in STEM fields. The FYRE in STEM program is open to all majors. The deadline is in TWO DAYS, on Friday, October 16.

Alisa-Beth Pelletier is a Cohen Honors Ambassador who participated in WSU’s First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) program, which is open to all first-year students interested in STEM fields.
“One of my favorite parts of the First-Year Research Experience has been getting the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Nathan Thompson on research involving quantum simulation. Through FYRE, I’ve been able to explore topics outside of my mechanical engineering coursework and learn more about the research process, including how to approach complex problems, work through challenges, and apply what I’ve learned in new ways. It has been really rewarding to contribute to research as an undergraduate and gain experience that I would not normally get in the classroom. FYRE has definitely helped me grow as both a student and researcher!”
