Congratulations to WSU CSD alumna Corri Newman, MA, CCC-SLP, on the publication of her Master’s thesis research, along with her committee members, Dr. Erin O’Bryan, Dr. Imran Musaji, Dr. Douglas Parham, and Dr. Jamie Harrington. Corri and Dr. O’Bryan led Supported Conversation for Aphasia training for health professions students and the public during the 2024 Aphasia Awareness Day event at the Wichita State University Evelyn Hendren Cassat Speech Language Hearing Clinic. Corri measured how much the participants learned and reported the results in her thesis. Aphasia Awareness Day 2026 was a success!! Thank you to everyone who came out and a special thank you to our guest speakers who truly made the event possible! WSU CSD students and faculty held Aphasia Awareness Day on July 1. Guests learned from people with aphasia and care partners about their lives and experiences in healthcare. Attendees received training on how to be better conversation partners using Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia. SLP graduate students taught attendees about stroke, aphasia, and SLPs’ scope of practice in healthcare. Shout out to Tayana Martin for taking the photos!

Congratulations to Communication Sciences and Disorders MA student Olivia Kerr! She represented the College of Health Professions at the WSU Service Learning Showcase on April 15th. She presented on her service learning experience designing an adapter for respiratory training devices for clients with mobility impairments. She also created a public repository for the 3D files, instructions so others can replicate the assistive technology, and released it all under a free-use creative commons license.
