Last week, with the help of ANRIM student worker Kellsie Shrack, I gave a demonstration to a few summer camp students on how we collect certain water quality data from the Little Miami River. That contraption in my hands is a hollow, plastic cylinder strapped to a cinder block; the inside of the cylinder will house a device called a sonde. The entire arrangement then gets submerged. Sondes can monitor a variety of parameters (such as pH and dissolved oxygen levels) at set time intervals and be tapped at a later date in order to gather the information.
