Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences Department

Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences Department Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences Department Environmental engineering is not a desk job.

Majors in the field learn and apply fundamental principles of environmental engineering to analyze and solve various engineering problems in areas such as air pollution control, water and wastewater treatment, and solid and hazardous waste management, with consideration to technical, ecological, socio-political, economic, and ethical factors.

GSA Publications Update
The June issue of is now available online: https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/geology/issue/50/6

Cover: Greenlandic tidewater glaciers, Akullersuup Sermia (left) and Kangiata Nunaata Sermia (right) calve into the ice-choked fjord, Kangersuneq, southwest Greenland. Interpretation and analyses of sediments in valleys adjacent to the fjord enables a very rare reconstruction of the confluence and rapid advance of these glaciers during the 12th and 13th centuries CE, at a time when the Norse occupied their most remote settlements within a few kilometers of the advancing glacier terminus. See ‘Greenland tidewater glacier advanced rapidly during era of Norse settlement’ by Pearce et al. https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/geology/article-abstract/50/6/704/612785/Greenland-tidewater-glacier-advanced-rapidly

Read this fabulous student perspective on Summer Research from senior Environmental Science major, Marissa Popis, who is working on a research activity with classmate, Brandon Whitman.
"I am very lucky to be able to be a part of this summer research! Brandon and I are studying a local blueberry field for soil analysis! We were fortunate to come on a beautiful day where we took sediment cores and bulk samples for further analysis on the soil's characteristics. This way we can see what the current soil is like and be able to suggest improvements based on previous works for blueberry fields. This work provides experience that I need for my future career as an environmental scientist! I am really enjoying this research so far and cannot wait to see what the results entail!"
