William & Mary will be hosting the 4th Annual Virginia Area Linguistics (VALing) conference, which will be held virtually on Saturday, April 23, 2022. VALING is a research conference dedicated to promoting the study of linguistics by undergraduates in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic area. Research in any linguistic discipline is welcome, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, field work, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, etc. We hope to have a wide range of topics and voices represented. We are pleased to have Cynthia Lukyanenko (GMU) as the keynote speaker.

Abstract submission. We are currently accepting abstracts for full 20-min talks and 5-min "micro talks" (poster equivalent). The deadline for abstract submission is Monday, March 7, 2022. Information about the abstract requirements and submission process is posted on the conference website: https://www.wm.edu/as/linguistics/valing/index.php.

Abram Clear ’21, a linguistics and anthropology major, discovered a lot about himself during his college years, and he’s quick to credit the inclusive and welcoming home W&M provided throughout that time.

Friends of W&M Linguistics! Tomorrow April 13 is here in Williamsburg. Our friend and former colleague Anne Harper Charity Hudley will be moving soon to Stanford, but she hasn’t forgotten us. She’s just established a W&M Linguistics Justice Award and Opportunity Fund (4975) which will provide awards to W&M students whose work demonstrates a commitment to linguistic justice. As the budget allows, this fund will support two annual awards, one for a senior linguistics major and a second for an undergraduate student who has taken linguistics coursework. Any budget amount above $10,000 at the beginning of a fiscal year may be used to support student opportunities such as research projects and conference attendance/travel for any area of linguistics.
You can be among the first to get this fund started by going to https://giving.wm.edu/ and searching for linguistic justice or entering code 4975. [ˈθæŋk ju]!
