Writer in Residence Lamar Giles goes back in the William & Mary Special Collections Research Center to tell us about another exciting item highlighting Virginia women writers.

Today we’re looking at something a little wild. This small, but imaginative 1946 children’s book, Little Fur Family, written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Garth Williams is bound in rabbit fur. Few editions survive, but this one has remained in beautiful condition.

Masterful storyteller Paul Hendrickson will lead an immersive weekend writing workshop at the W&M Washington Center June 12-14 that you won’t want to miss.

In this workshop, you will learn how to deep read iconic historical photographs and participate in creative writing exercises that will make you think more critically about visual storytelling.

By the end of the weekend, you will come away with a new understanding of the stories captured in your own photographs and how it connects to the broader American story.

This is the second year Hendrickson will host this profound and curiosity-guided workshop. Hendrickson is a revered nonfiction author and former journalist. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania for over two decades. His approach to writing is collaborative and invites you to dig deep and be open to the unexpected.

You don’t have to be a writer or photographer to attend. All are welcome.
